1. An easy way to make Barbie or other doll blankets is to choose a motif pattern that calls for worsted weight yarn and substitute crochet cotton(size 10) or baby/fingering weight yarn and reduce the number of motifs.
2. When you put fringe on a afghan or scarf use a latch hook instead of a crochet hook. The little latch helps you hold onto the strands and pull all of them through at the same time.
3. I bought some yarn on sale that had fell and was stepped on. I removed the wrapper and placed the yarn in a knee high pantihose stocking(have also used an athletic sock also). Tie the top in a knot. Wash and dry according to the wrapper instructions. Your yarn is now ready to use.
4. Need a pattern for toddler slippers? Try using a bootie pattern that uses baby yarn, fingering yarn or cotton thread. Substitute a worsted weight yarn and a large enough hook for the desired gauge. For even larger slippers, hold 2 strands together and work as one throughout. I like using 2 different colors for a variegated effect.
5. When giving an afghan as a gift include a little extra yarn in a plastic bag for mending should the need arise.
6. Sweaters or any item that must be dried flat can be placed on a towel on top of your dryer. The heat from the dryer will dry the sweater quickly but gently.
7. Use a piece of paraffin as a pin cushion and you pins and needles will slide easily in and out of your fabric.
