My interest in my roots stems from: My Dad, for creating me (Mom helped, too) & instilling the heart of the Gemmill name in me, & my Uncle Ted (Dad's brother), for being the family historian & getting me interested in our history as a Proud Scottish family...I dedicate this page to them. Thanks, you guys!!

The following is my weak attempt to put on this page a synopsis of my uncle's book on Scotland, & the Gemmill Clan:
An early Celtic race, fierce warriors who came by the sea from the country we now call Ireland, known to the Romans as Scotti, meaning sea raiders, were amomg the first to inhabit what we today call Scotland, thus the name. These early people invaded North Britain in the fifth century, & found the lands & the islands an attractive place to settle. Many, many of them came in the sixth century. One of their kings, Fergus Mor, established his stronghold at Dunadd, near Crinan, on Kintyre Isle, about 500 A.D. It was from this kingdom that the first kings succeeded who would rule over the whole of Scotland.
The name "Gemmill" (Gamel), used first as a nickname & eventually as a surname, is believed to come from the Anglo-Saxon word "Gemal, or Gambol", the Danish "Gammel", or Old Norse "Gammal", all of them meaning "old or ancient". So far as Scotland is concerned, it is uncertain when or where the Gamels or Gemmills first settled. It is not until the middle of the 1400's that Gemil, another form of the name Gamel, is for the first time found associated with the ownership of land in Scotland. Various circumstances point to a very early, if not the first, permanent settlement of Gemmills in Scotland to have been in the upland portion of Ayrshire known as Fenwick on the old lands of Raith, in the year 1264. The Gemmills of Scotland, dislocated refugees from England, proved to be a hardy, industrious, & courageous people. They were steadfast in their political & religious beliefs. The earliest records of the Gemmills in Scotland are found in the County Ayr (presently Strathclyde) region. Altho' most of the Gemmills of a later date in Scotland were farmers & herdsmen, many were also politicians, religious leaders, lawyers, merchants & sailors.
