TRIBAL SOURCES OF AL KHAMSA FOUNDATION HORSES:

The Gomussa and other branches of the Saba

The Gomussa branch of the Saba has provided many Al Khamsa foundation horses such as HAIDEE, a Muniqi Hadruj and YATAGHAN, Kuhailan Juraban (or Muniqi Hadruj according to Huntington and Raswan). They were imported to England in 1874 for a Mr. Sandeman, and their daughter. *Naomi was imported to the USA by Huntington. In 1875, Roger Upton imported KESIA I and KESIA II (both Kuhailan Nauwaq) to England. Between 1878 and 1887 the Blunts acquired BASILISK (Saqlawi Jedran), QUEEN OF SHEBA (Abayyan Sharrak) and AZREK (Saqlawi Jedran), all from the Gomussa. In 1906, Davenport got *FARHA (Muniqi Sbaili) and *HALEB (Muniqi Sbaili) and *WERDI (Kuhailan Kurush) from the Gomussa Saba.

Additional Al Khamsa foundation horses come from other branches of the Saba, including DONIA, a Kuhaylan Mimri, imported to Egypt around 1900 for Prince Ahmed Pasha Kemal. *MIRAGE, a Saqlawi Jedran (Dal'ah) stallion, bred by the Saba was owned by King Feisal of Iraq, prior to being sent to England, where he was owned but never used by Lady Wentworth. He was imported to the USA in 1930 by R. Selby.

YATAGHAN(GSB) HUNTINGTON
An 1867 chestnut Kuhaylan-Jurayban stallion bred by Sheikh Sulayman Ibn Murshid of the Qumusa-Saba selected by James Henry Skene for Arthur Sandeman and imported in 1874 to England by Sandeman.
By a Kuhaylan-Halawi out of a Kuhaylah- Juraybah.
NOTES: The above information is from the entry for Yataghan in Weatherby's General Stud Book Vol. XIII p. 570. Carl Raswan in his Index entry #11095 incorrectly quotes Weatherby;'s as showing Yataghan (GSB) as a Myu'niqi and full brother to Haidee (GSB). Haidee, also of this importation, was registered as by a Mu'niqi-Hadruj out of a Mu'niqiyah-Hadrujiyah. Raswan also says that Yataghan (GSB) and Haidee (GSB) were selected by then-Captain Roger D. Upton for Mr. Skene (H.M. Consul at Aleppo). The Raswan information appears to be based upon the writing of Randolph Huntington--*Naomi's owner--who stated in correspondence that Yataghan and Haidee were full siblings chosen by Upton. (Upton himself rules out the "full sibling" statement, as shown later in this entry.)
Upton made two trips to the desert in late 1874 and again in early summer 1875, both times with Mr. Skene. The GSB shows the Skene/Sanderman importation--dated 1874--as a different importation from the Upton importation--dated 1875-- of *Kesia I, amongst others, for the Hon. Henry Chaplin in 1875. It appears that the Sandeman and Chaplin horses should not be completely separated. The Sandeman entries in the GSB, in addition to Yataghan and Haidee, include a mare named Zuleika, who was by a Mu'niqi-Hadruj out of a Mu'niqiyah-Hadrujiyah, the same as Haidee.
An Upton letter is quoted by Rev. Francis Furse Vidal, who owned *Naomi in England, as follows:
"I have tried to get a Managhi Hedrudj of the Family of Ibn Sbeyel of the Gomussa tribe of the Sebaa Anezeh ... I have succeeded and one of them is now in my stable. I had enquired at the same time about mares; and two have come of the same family. The four are as follows: No. 1, Chestnut stallion, 4 yrs. old, 14.2. His dam a Keheilet Jeabeh taken from the Heissa Anezeh, and his sire the famous Keheilan Hellawi of the Shammar tribe. No. 2. Pearl Grey stallion with black mane and black tail, tipped with white, 4 years old 14.2 His dam 'Managhi Hedrudj of Ibn Sbeyel family of Gomussa Anezeh, and his sire of the same breed, now in the stud of the King of Italy. No. 3. Bay mare 5 years old 14.1 1/2. Same breed as No. 2, but dam and sire not the same. No. 4. Chesnut mare 4 years old 14.3 Same breed as No. 2 and 3, but dam and sire not the same..."
(emphasis is Al Khamsa;'s) No. 1 corresponds to the GSB entry for Yataghan. No. 2 does not correspond with any entry in the GSB. No. 3 corresponds with the GSB entry for Zuleika. No. 4 corresponds with the GSB entry for Haidee.
Vidal wrote to Huntington about the Sandman importation:
"Mrs Upton cannot remember the date of the arrival--but she thinks it must have been in March or April 1875 or 1876. The latter date would tally with Naomi's age and with what Mr. Sandeman told me."
(Both letters quoted by Thornton Chard: "From Needham Market to Oyster Bay," The Horse, May-June and July-August 1942 issues.) [See also the entries for Haidee (GSB), p. 62, and Kesia I (GSB), p. 69.]
Sire of
*Naomi 1877 cm out of Haidee(GSB)

(This is the birthdate shown in the GSB for *Naomi. Huntington claimed the mare to have been imported to England in utero from the desert. This might have been possible. However, if the 1874-5 importation date shown in the GSB is correct, *Naomi would have been foaled in 1875-6 and the 1877 foaling date shown for her in the GSB would have been incorrect.)

HAIDEE(GSB) HUNTINGTON
An 1869 chestnut Mu'niqiyah- Hadrujiyah purchased by Mr. James Henry Skene, H.M.Consul at Aleppo, for Mr. Arthur Sandeman and imported in 1874 to England by Sandeman. By a My'niqi-Hadruj out of a My'niqiyah-Hadrujiyah.
NOTES: The above information is from the entry for Haidee in Weatherby's General Stud Book Vol. XIII p. 571. Entry #3262 in Raswan's Index describes Haidee as purchased by Maj. Roger Upton for Mr. Skene. This entry also shows Haidee as bred by Sheikh Sulayman Ibn Murshid of the Qumusa-Saba. Upton made two trips to the desert: in late 1874 and again in early summer 1875, both times with Mr. Skene. The GSB shows the Skene/ Sandman importation--dated 1874--as a different importation from the Upton importation--dated 1875--of *Kesia I, amongst others, for the Hon. Henry Chaplin.
It appears that the Sandeman and Chaplin importations should not have been completely separated. A letter from Upton quoted by Rev. Francis Furse Vidal to Randolph Huntington (Chard, 1942) seems to corroborate the Upton connection to Haidee. This letter also indicates that Haidee was of the Sbaili family of the Mu'niqi-Hadruj strain and substrain. [See the entry for Kesia I(GSB), p. 69, and the extended note under Yataghan(GSB), p. 90.]
Dam of
*Naomi 1877 cm by Yataghan(GSB)
This is the birthdate shown in the GSB for *Naomi. Huntington claimed the mare to have been imported to England in utero from the desert. The extended note under Yataghan (GSB) indicates that this might have been possible. However, if the 1874-5 importation date shown in the GSB is correct, *Naomi would have been foaled in 1875-6 and the 1877 foaling date shown for her in the GSB would have been incorrect.

KESIA I(GSB) BORDEN
A ca. 1865 bay Kuyaylah-Nuwaqiyah mare of the strain of Dabbi Ibn Nauwaq of the Qumusa-Saba and imported in 1875 to England by then Captain Roger D. Upton for the Hon. Henry Chaplin.
By a Kuhaylan-Nauwaq out of a Kuhaylan- Nauwaqiyah.
Notes: The above information (except for the birthdate and importation material) is from a translation of Kesia I's Arabic export document as published in Roger Upton's Gleanings from the Desert of Arabia, p. 387. Sheikh Sulayman Ibn Mirshid of the Qumusa-Saba is shown as the person sealing (or testifying to) Kesia I's document. The entry for Kesia I in Weatherby's General Stud Book Vol. XIII, p. 571, shows the same information and adds the date and importation material. Entry #4907 in Carl Raswan's Index quotes Upton and the GSB entry. Dam of
Kesia II (GSB) 1876 bm see her entry, below.

KESIA II(GSB) BORDEN
An 1876 bay Kuhayklah-Nauwaqiyah mare imported in utero in 1876 to England by then-Captain Roger D. Upton for the Hon. Henry Chaplin.
By a Saqlawi-Al Abd out of Kesia I(GSB)
NOTES: The above information (except for the color) is from the entry for Kesia II in Weatherby's General Stud Book Vol. XVII p. 810, except that Kesia II is shown as bred by Mr. Chaplin. This is a difference in language, as the GSB used "breeder" to indicate the owner of the dam at time of foaling, Kesia I was already in foal when purchased--from Sheikh Sulayman Ibn Mirshid of the Qumusa-Saba, according to Upton's Gleanings from the Desert of Arabia, p. 387--making it probable that Kesia II was bred by the Qumusa-Saba. Data for the sire of Kesia II is confirmed in the Upton translation of the Kesia I pedigree, which adds that he was of the Ruala Anazah. Entry #4908 in Carl Raswan's Index quotes Upton and the GSB entry and adds the color. [See the entry for Kesia I(GSB(), above.]

DONIA(APK) EGYPT(I)

A ca. 1900 Kuhaylah-Mimriyah mare of the strain of Ibn Muwayni of the Saba. Also spelled Dunya.

NOTE: The above information (except for the birthdate, which is an Al Khamsa estimate) is from Carl Raswan's Index corrections entries #518 and #1181. Donia is assumed to have been in the stud of Prince Ahmed Pasha Kemal, Egypt. [See the entry for Nafaa El Kebira (APK), p. 125]

BASILISK(BLT) BLUNT

An 1875 grey Saqlawiyah-Jidraniyah(Derri) mare foaled in the possession of Abd El Jadr of Deyr, purchased by Mr. J.H.Skene, H.M.'s Consul at Aleppio for Wilfrid and Lady Anne Blunt and imported in 1879 to England by the Blunts.
NOTES: The above information is from Basilisk's entry in Weatherby's General Stud Book Vol. XVI p. 651. It is consistent (exept that the birthdate is shown as 1876) with material in Archer, et al.: The Crabbet Arabian Stud p. 95, and Upton: Desert Heritage, p. 60, both said to be based on access to records of the Blunts. According to Archer, the Blunts initially entered Basilisk in their herd book, and in Weatherby's General Stud Book (in Vols. XIV and XV) as a Saqlawiyah-Ubayriyah of Ibn Ed-Derri. Later they met with Ibn Ed-Derri, after which her entry was changed to read as shown above. According to Upton, Basilisk was said to be by a bay Saqlawi-Jidran of Ibn Ed-Derri of the Rasallin-Saba out of a Saqlawiyah- Jidraniyah of Ibn Ed-Derri and was bred by Abd El Jader. Carl Raswan shows both the Ubayri and Jidran .sub-strains in entry #1254 of his Index, evidently referencing Blunt notes. [See under Pharoah (BLT), p. 79]

QUEEN OF SHEBA(BLT) BLUNT
An 1875 brown Abayyah-Sharrakiyah mare bred by Erheyen Ibn Alian of the Qumusa-Saba, purchased from Bedeyan Ibn Mirshid of the Qumusa through James Henry Skene, H.M.'s Consul at Aleppo for Wilfrid and Lady Anne Blunt and imported in 1879 to England by the Blunts.
        By a Mu'niqi-Hadruj o f Ibn Jufayfi of the Qumusa-Saba out of an Abayyah-Sharrakiyah.
NOTES: The above information (except for the Skene note, from Lady Anne Blunt: Journals & Corrsepondence. pp 36-40) is from Queen of Sheba's entry in Weatherby's General Stud Book Vol. XIV p. 604, which is consistent with material from Archer, et al.: The Crabbet Arabian Stud, p. 104-5, and Upton: Desert Heritage, p. 68, both said to be based on access to records of the Blunts. These references also show Queen of Sheba's dam as bay. Entry #7863 in Carl Raswan's Index shows the same information as the GSB.

AZREK(BLT) BLUNT

An 1881 grey Saqlawi-Jidran (Derri) stallion bred by Sheikh Mashlab Ibn Ed-Derri of the Qumusa-Saba, imported in 1888 to England by Wilfrid and Lady Anne Blunt.
Out of a chestnut Saqlawiyah-Jidraniyah of Ibn Ed-Derri who was by a Hadban out of Pharoah's dam.
Exported in 1891 to the Cape of Good Hope by Hon. Cecil Rhodes.
NOTES: The above information is from Azrek's entry in Weatherby's General Stud Book Vol. XVI p. 657 and is consistent with material from Archer, et al.: The Crabbet Arabian Stud p. 95 and in Upton: Desert Heritage p. 32, both said to be based on access to records of the Blunts. Archer and Upton show Ed-Derri as a member of the Rasallin-Saba, relatives of the Qumusa. In addition, the Blunts, according to Archer, imported Azrek in 1887 to Egypt prior to his importation into England. Azrek is also shown as exported in 1891 from England to the Cape of Good Hope by Hon. Cecil Rhodes. Entry #1064 in Carl Raswan's Index shows the same information as the GSB entry.

*FARHA 42 DAVENPORT
A 1900 grey Mu'niqiyah-Sbailiyah mare imported in 1906 to the U.S.A. by Homer Davenport.
        By a Mu'niqi-Sbaili and our of a Mu'niqiyah- Sbailyah
NOTES: The above information (except for the birthdate) is from a 1993 translation of *Farha's Arabic export document by Jamal A. A. Rabia and Sahar D. Rabia (Rabia, Rabia, Dirks & Dirks, 1993) *Farha's entry in the 1909 stud book of the Arabian Horse Club furnishes the birthdate and is otherwise consistent with this translation. Davenport's 1909 catalog indicates that *Farha was of the strain of Hassin El Haj Aly, and that she was bred by Ibn Aga Zidadh of the Qumusa-Saba Anazah. Entry #2590 for *Farha in Carl Raswan's Index says that *Farha's sire was a Mu'niqi-Sbaili of Ibn Tamran of the Amarat.

*HALEB 25 DAVENPORT

        By a Shuwayman-Sabbah out of a Mu'niqiyah-Sbailiyah.
NOTES: The above information is from the translation of *Haleb's Arabic export document published in 1909 in Davenport's book, My Quest of the Arabian Horse. Signatories are shown as Hashem Bey Ibn Mhayd, Akmet Haffez and Sheikh Ali Rashid of the "El-Boukhamis." *Haleb's entry in the 1909 Arabian Horse Club stud book agrees with the translation, showing *Haleb as bred by the Qumusa-Saba Anazah. Davenport in his 1909 catalog says that *Haleb was "of the strain of Ali Rashid" and was bred by the Qumusa-Saba, who presented him to Nazim Pasha, Governor of Aleppo. He was then presented to Davenport by Nazim Pasha. Entry #3333 in Carl Raswan's Index shows *Haleb as by a Shuwayman-Sabbah of Ibn Amiri al-Arafah of the Ubida-Saba and as out of a Mu'niqiyah-Sbailiyah of Ibn Zabyan of the Saba, who had her from Ibn Farraj of the Aslam-Shammar, with *Haleb himself shown as bred by Ibn Zabyan of the Qumusa-Saba.

 *WERDI 41 DAVENPORT
A 1901 chestnut Kuhaylah-Kurush mare imported in 1906 to the U.S.A. by Homer Davenport
.        NOTES: The above informtion is from a 1989 translation of *Werdi's Arabic export document by Badr al-Badr (Cadranell, 1990). Some further explanation is needed: the pedigree document which accompanied *Werdi has Arabic writing on both sides. The front is for a hamra("red") filly aged two years, ten months, sired by a Mu'niqi-Sbaili stallion and out of a zarka (grey) Kuhaylan-Kurush mare. This section is dated February 1893. The back of the document is partially illegible, but appears to refer to *Werdi. It describes a shakra (chestnut) mare aged five years who was evidently descended from --or in some way related to-the "red" and/or the grey mare described on the front. This side of the document bears the seal of Akmet Haffez (see ancestral Elements: Davenport p.42)
The entry for *Werdi in the initial volume of the 1909 Arabian Horse Club stud book says that *Werdi was a 1900 mare by a Mu'niqi-Sbaili out of a Kuhaylan- Kurush. This entry is consistent with Davenport's 1909 catalog, which however shows a birthdate of 1902 and says she was "of Hay Mohamed" of the Qumusa-Saba Anazah, and "got by Faris Aga el Terkimane" of Hama.         *Werdi's entry #10962 in Carl Raswan's Index shows the same information as the Davenport catalog with elaboration of information for dam and breeder, but shows different information for her sire. Raswan shows *Werdi as by a Dahman-Abu Amir of Ibn Hamsi of the Qumusa- Sagaa, as out of an Kuhaylah-Kurush for the Ibn Mijlad of the Zibina-Amarat and as bred by Hussayn Muhammed Ibn Shalhub of the Qumusa-Saba Anazah.

*MIRAGE 790 MIRAGE
A 1919 grey Saqlawi-Jidran(Dal'ah) stallion bred by the Saba and acquired by the Deneduasha tribe for King Feisal of Iraq. *Mirage was imported to France by King Feisal where he was presented to the Italian ambassador Signor de Martino. De Martino then exported *Mirage to England where he was purchased by Lady Wentworth at Tattersall's auction house in 1923. Imported in 1930 to the U.S.A. by Roger Selby.
By a Kuhaylan-Ajuz of the Anazah out of a Saqlawiyah-Jidraniyah of the Dal'ah family.
NOTES: The above information (except for transfers of ownership after receipt of King Feisal) is from the Arabic document for *Mirage on file at the Arabian Horse Trust and AHC importation records and is consistent with Raswan's Index entry #6407. *Mirage's document is dated 1927 from the Royal Stables at Baghdad, Iraq, sealed by El Mahassami, Director and was translated by Lady Wentworth. *Mirage's date of birth is given as 1909 in Vol. IV of the Arabian Horse Club stud books, but this is corrected in Vol. V. Records of ownership are from The Crabbet Arabian Stud, p. 108 (Archer, et al.).
