TRIBAL SOURCES OF AL KHAMSA FOUNDATION HORSES:

The Ibn Mhayd family and other groups of the Fid'an

Several generations of the Ibn Mhayd family of the Fid'an supplied horses to Abbas Pasha of Egypt, Wilfrid and Lady Blunt of England, Homer Davenport of the USA, and possibly to the Ottoman Sultan.

Abbas Pasha of Egypt, prior to 1855 obtained SAMHA and ZOBEYNI, both of the Saqlawi Jedran strain of Ibn Subeyni of the Mhayd-Fid'an. About 20 years later the Blunts acquired KARS, an 1874 Saqlawi Jedran of Ibn Subeyni of the Mhayd Fid'an. The 1873 Saqlawi Jedran stallion, *LEOPARD was a gift from the Sultan of Turkey to President U.S. Grant. According to Randolph Huntington (who used him in his breeding program) and to Raswan, *Leopard was bred by Jid'an Ibn Mhayd who gave him to the Sultan. If so, he could have been an older brother of Kars.

A little more than 50 years after Abbas Pasha got horses of Ibn Mhayd's breeding, Davenport acquired as a gift, the 1899 mare, *WADDUDA a Saqlawi Al-Abd. She had been Hashem Bey Ibn Mhayd's favorite war mare.

Some of the other Al Khamsa Foundation horses from the Fid'an include the Blunt's Muniqi-Hadruj mare, JERBOA and the Davenport horses, *AZRA (Saqlawi Ubayran), and *RESHAN a Kuhailan Haifi whose sire, however, was owned by the Saba tribe.

Thanks to Peter Sarra for the following photographs from his Hingham Stock Farm collection: *Reshan; to Mickey Hickman for the photographs of *Wadduda,.

SAMHA (AP) EGYPT (I)

A ca. 1850 Saqlawiyah-Jidraniyah mare from Ibn Subayni of the Mhayd-Fid'an imported prior to 1855 to Egypt for Abbas Pasha.
NOTES: The above infromation (except for the dates, which are Al Khamsa estimates) is from the 1932 certified pedigree for *Bint Serra I from the stud of Prince Kemal El Dine. Carl Raswan's Index entry #9056 shows the same information as the pedigree.

ZOBEYNI (AP) EGYPT (I)

An 1844 grey Saqlawi-Jidran(Subayni) stallion of the strain of Ibn Subayni of the Mhayd-Fid'an imported prior to 1855 to Egypt for Abbas Pasha. Also called El Zobeny.
NOTES: The above information (except for the birthdate) is from the pedigree on p.12a of the RAS History and the 1932 certified pedigree for *Bint Serra I from the stud of Prince Kemal El Dine. Lady Anne Blunt in a herd book entry for Bint Nura (BLT) (courtesy of Michael Bowling, private communication) describes Zobeyni as a grey (white) original horse, a Seqlawi-Jidran from the Ibn Subayni of the M'hayd Anazah. Carl Raswan's Index entry #11350 shows Zobeyni (AP) as an 1844 grey stallion bred by Barrak Ibn Subayni of the Mhayd-Fid'an. Raswan further shows Zobeyni's sire as Barq, a Saqlawi-Jidran(Sudan) of Salih Ibn Subayni of the fid'an and his dam as Snunah, a Saqlawiyah-Jidraniyah
(Sudan) of Al Sunan of the Fid'an.
The change of family name from (Sudan) to (Subayni) shown in the Raswan entry demonstrates how substrains developed in the desert. A Saqlawi-Jidran line is bred by Ibn Sudan until it becomes known as a Saqlawi- Jidran of Ibn Sudan or a Saqlawi-Sudani. The Saqlawi-
Jidran of Ibn Sudan line is then used by Ibn Subayni. With time this group develops an identity of its own and becomes a Saqlawi-Jidran of Ibn Subayni, and perhaps even eventually a Saqlawi-Subayni. The links in the chain of heritage from the Saqlawi to Jidran to Sudan to Subayni remain unchanged, although they may be unspoken.

By a Saqlawi-Jidran out of a Saqlawiyah-Jidraniyah of Ibn Subayni.
NOTES: The above information is from Kar's entry in Weatherby's General Stud Book Vol. XIV p. 602 and is consistent with material in Archer et al.: The Crabbet Arabian Stud, p. 99, and in Upton: Desert Heritage. p. 16, and The Arab Horse, p. 157, all said to be based on access to records of the Blunts. Archer and Upton also add that Kars was stated to be a sire of the same strain, and that he was implrted to Australia in 1885 by D. MacKay. Entry #4791 in Carl Raswan's Index quotes the Blunt information.

II (1918) Arabian Horse Club stud book entry for *Leopard, his initial entry. According to Carl Raswan's Index entry #5548, the breeder of *Leopard (originally called Leopard in Arabic, or Nimr) was Jid'an ("Djeytan") Ibn Mhayd of the Fid'an Anazah, who had presented him to the Ottoman governor of Syria, who in turn presented him to Sultan Abdul Hamid II as a Saqlawi-Jidran by a Kuhaylan-Ras al Fidawi.          NOTES: The above information is from a 1989 translation of *Wadduda's entry in the original 1909 volume of the Arabian Horse Club stud book, Davenport's 1909 catalog, and the entry #10829 for *Wadduda in Carl Raswan's Index, except that these references show substrains of Dahman-Khumayis for *Wadduda's sire and Saqlawiyah-Al Abd for her dam. Raswan's description of her pedigree is as follows: by a Dahman-Khumayis of Ibn Shalhub of the Qumusa-Saba and out of a Saqlawiyah-Al Abd of Ibn Sami of the Shammar owned by Hashem Bey Ibn Mhayd, Sheikh of the Fid'an.

JERBOA(BLT) BLUNT

An 1874 bay Mu'niqiyah-Hadrujiyah mare bred at Deyr out of a mare from the Ubayd-Fid'an and imported in 1878 to England by Wilfrid and Lady Anne Blunt. By a Mu'niqi-Sbaili out of a Mu'niqiyah-Hadrujiyah.
NOTES: The above information is from Jerboa's entry in Weatherby's General Stud Book Vol. XIV p. 603. Archer et al: The Crabbet Arabian Stud, p. 98, and Upton: Desert Heritage, p. 84, and The Arab Horse, p. 131, all said to be based on access to records of the Blunts, show Jerboa as bred by Othman El Abd of the Ubayd-Fid'an, in the neighborhood of Deyr, and as purchased from him. These references also elaborate on Jerboa's sire and dam as follows: by a Mu'niqi-Sbaili of the Qumusa-Saba out of a bay Mu'niqiyah-Hadrujiyah. Entry #4444 in Carl Raswan's Index quotes the Blunt information.

*AZRA 32 DAVENPORT
A 1903 grey Saqlawi-Ubayri stallion bred by the Muqathra-Fid'an and imported in 1906 to the U.S.A. by Homer Davenport. By a Kuhaylan-Kurush out of a Saqlawiyah-Ubayriyah of the strain of "Muhareb El Khraz" of the Muqathra.
NOTES: The above information (except for the breeder) is from a recent summary translation of *Azra's Arabic export document (M.A.El-Fouly, ca. 1967, private communication). The information is consistent with that in *Azra's entry in the 1909 stud book of the Arabian Horse Club, which adds the breeder, and with Davenport's 1909 catalog, which says that *Azra's sire was of the family of Maharib el Hazziz of the Muqathra, that *Azra's breeder was Mesoud el Kashish, and that *Azra was purchased from Sheikh Ali of the "Abogonese." In Davenport's book My Quest of the Arabian Horse, describing the purchase of *Azra, he says he was bred by Sheikh Ali of the "Abu Gomese" and that his sire was an Abayyan-Sharrak. The information about the sire disagrees with *Azra's Arabic document, the AHC stud book, and the Davenport 1909 catalog.
Entry #1061 for *Azra in Carl Raswan's Index shows the same information as the stud book and Davenport's 1909 catalog with the following elaborations: *Azra is shown as by a Kuhaylan-Kurush of Muharib Ibn Hazza Al-Bughayz of the Muqathra, as out of a Saqlawiyah-Ubayriyah of Ibn Bughayz of the Muqathra and bred by Mesoud El Qayshish of the Muqathra-Fidran.

NOTES: The above information is from a recent translation of *Reshan's Arabic export document by Jamal A.A. Rabia (in Dirks, Dirks, & Rabia, 1992). The information is consistent with *Reshan's entry in the inital 1909 stud book of the Arabian Horse Club, Davenort's 1909 catalog and the entry #8292 for *Reshan in Carl Raswan's Index. Raswan shows *Reshan as sired by a Kuhaylan-Ajuz of Ibn Kardush of the Saba out of a Kuhaylah-Haifiyah of Ibn Huraymis of the Fid'an.
