TRIBAL SOURCES OF AL KHAMSA FOUNDATION HORSES:

The Ruala Anazah

Abbas Pasha of Egypt got GHAZIEH(AP) and SUEYD, both Saqlawi Jedrans of Ibn Sudan and WADIHAH, a Shuwayman Sabbah from the Ruala tribe sometime prior to 1855, while Prince Ahmed Pasha Kemel acquired MAANAGIA HADRAGIA, a Muniqi Hadruj, in 1885. In 1881 the Blunts imported the Kuhaylan Ajuz of Ibn Rodan mare, RODANIA to England. They had gotten her from the Roala. In 1906, Davenport imported *MUSON, a Kuhaylan Abu Muhsin, bred by the Ruala.

Thanks to Mickey Hickman for the photograph of *Muson.

GHAZIEH(AP) EGYPT(1)

A ca. 1850 grey Saqlawiyah-Jidraniyah(Sudan) mare from Ibn Sudan of the Ruala Anazah and imported prior to 1855 to Egypt for Abbas Pasha.
NOTES: The above information (except for the dates which are Al Khamsa estimates) is from Upton: Desert Heritage, p. 96, said to be based on access to notes of the Blunts.
Carl Raswan, in entries #3018, #10043 (underlined section), #11068 and #4398 of his Index, shows Ghazieh as a grey Saqlawiyah-Jidraniyah mare bred by Nahar Az-Zalhubi of the Qumusa-Saba. A second name, Yamama, given to two of the entries, was a common name for an Arabian mare. In entry #4398, he elaborates, saying she was taken in-uttero by the Ruala, ending by being imported into Egypt for Abbas Pasha. He gives her pedigree as by Al-Mahyubi Al-Araj, a chestnut Saqlawi-Jidran (Sudan) stallion and out of Ghazala, a chestnut Saqlawiyah-Jidraniyah of the Qumusa-Saba by a Saqlawi-Jidran (Sudan) stallion. If this pedigree is correct, there was apparently an error in recording the color of at least one of the three horses involved, since according to current genetic theory a grey horse must have at least one grey parent.
The grey mare of Nahar Az-Zalhubi which Raswan says is Ghazieh ("the mare that was carried to Egypt") is described in both the Prince Mohamed Aly's translation of a section of the Abbas Pasha manuscript as published in Breeding of Pure Bred Arab Horses, part 2 p. 46, and the translation by Gulsun Sherif and Judith Forbis of a book of Arabic testimonies compiled in 1853 about the Abbas Pasha horses, published as The Abbas Pasha Manuscript, 1993, pp. 588. Both translations head this section "Kuhaylan al Jawish" and describe the grey mare of Az-Zalhubi as descended from (not out of) "the Ghazalah," which would remove the apparent color discrepancy. The Raswan explanation of the inclusion of a Saqlawi line as Kuhaylan al Jawish is in Index entry #4396 under Jawish.
Translations of the Abbas Pasha Manuscript referring to the history of the Sudan family of the Saqlawi-Jidran are shown by Sherif and Forbis (in The Abbas Pasha Manuscript, pp. 324-323) and also reportedly by Lady Anne Blunt as interpreted in chart form by Upton (in The Arab Horse, p. 280). Horses described in these references do not appear to correlate by name, owner or tribal affiliation with a mare of the description of Ghazieh or of the grey mare of Nahar Az-Zalhubi.

SUEYD(AP) EGYPT(I)

A ca. 1850 grey Saqlawi-Jidran of Ibn Sudan stallion bred by Ibn Sudan of the Ruala imported prior to 1855 to Egypt for Abbas Pasha. Also spelled Sneyd.
NOTES: The above information (except for the dates, which are Al Khamsa estimates and the color) is from the 1932 certified pedigree for *Bint Serra I from the stud of Prince Kemal El Dine. The pedigree spells the name "Sneyd." Lady Ann Blunt in a handwritten herd book entry for Feysul reproduced photographically in Upton: Desert Heritage, p. 8 describes Sueyd as "a fleabitten Seglawi Jedran (original horse) from Ibn Sudan." Entry #10049 in Carl Raswan's Index shows the same information as the Sheykh Obeyd herd book.

WADIHAH(SHUWAYMAH)(AP) EGYPT(I)

A ca. 1845 chestnut Shuwaymah-Sabbah mare stolen from the Saba Anazah by the Ruala Anazah and imported to Egypt by 1853 for Abbas Pasha.
         By Al Mahyubi Al-A'raj, a Saqlawi-Jidran (Sudan) out of a Shuwaymah-Sabbah.
NOTES: The above information (except for the dates which are Al Khamsa estimates) which appears to describe the Al Khamsa Foundation Horse Wadihah (Shuwaymah), is from the translation by Gulsun Sherif and Judith Forbis of a book of Arabic testimonies compiled in 1853 about the Abbas Pasha horses, published as The Abbas Pasha Manuscript, 1993, pp. 280-1.
A chestnut mare named Wadihah from Mohammad Ibn Nuwaydis of the Ruala and by Al Mahyubi is shown in the translation of lists in an Abbas Pasha manuscript by Prince Mohamed Aly as published in Breeding Pure Bred Arab Horses, part 2 p. 94. Entry #10842 for in Carl Raswan's Index shows the same information as the list translated by Prince Mohamed Aly.

MAANAGIA HADRAGIA(APK) EGYPT(I)

A ca. 1880 bay Mu'niqiyah-Hadrujiyah mare from Dorzi Ibn Ma'jil imported ca. 1885 to Egypt for Prince Ahmed Pasha Kemal. Also spelled Manakia Hadrajia.
NOTES: The above information (except for the dates which are Al Khamsa estimates) is from the RAS History, p.55 and the 1932 certified RAS pedigree for *Bint Saada. Lady Anne Blunt: Journals and Correspondence, on 3/9/1904 at Prince Ahmed's stables, describes Sabbah (unnamed) as a grey Mu'niqi-Sbaili stallion, his dam the Mu'niqiyah-Sbailiyah "brought from Arabia to the Tihawis (the Tahawi tribe in Egypt) from whom Ahmed Pasha took her." In the 1911 Sheykh Obeyd catalog, Lady Anne describes a mare as by "Sabbah...his dam the Manakieh Hedrujieh, brought direct from Ibn Majil of the Roala tribe to Prince Ahmed..." Entry #5913 in Carl Raswan's Index shows the same information as the RAS History. [See under Meanagi Sebeli(APK), p. 74.]

RODANIA(BLT) BLUNT

An 1869 chestnut Kuhaylan-Ajuz(Rodan)mare bred by Ibn Rodan of the Ruala, captured 1880 from Sheikh Sotamm Ibn Shaalan of the Ruala by Tais Ibn Sharban of the Qumusa-Saba. Purchased from Ibn Sharban by Wilfrid and Lady Anne Blunt and imported in 1881 to England by the Blunts.
NOTES: The above information is from Rodania's entry in Weatherby's General Stud Book Vol XIV p. 605, which is consistent with material from Archer et al.: The Crabbet Arabian Stud, p. 105-6, and Upton: Desert Heritage, p. 88, both based on access to records of the Blunts. Entry #8544 in Carl Raswan's Index shows the same information as the Blunts.

*MUSON 27 DAVENPORT

An 1899 grey Kuhaylan-Abu Muhsin stallion imported in 1906 to the U.S.A. by Homer Davenport
         By a Shuwayman-Sabbah out of a "red" Kuhaylat-Umm Muhsinnah.
NOTES: The above information, except for the birthdate, is from translations of *Muson's Arabic export document by Badr al-Badr (private communication, 1988) and Jamal A.A.Rabia (in Rabia, Dirks & Dirks, 1993). The birthdate is from *Muson's entry in the 1909 Arabian Horse Club stud book. The stud book indicates that *Muson was bred by the Ruala Anazah. The stud book information is consistent with Davenport's 1909 catalog, which adds that *Muson was purchased from "Sheykh Sheb Salami." According to *Muson's entry #6923 in Carl Raswan's Index, *Muson is shown as by a Shuwayman- Sabbah of Ibn Mulhim of the Hasana-Wuld Ali and as out of a Kuhaylat-Umm Muhsinnah of Ibn Jandal of the Suwalma-Ruala. Raswan equates Davenport's "Sheykh Sheb Salami" with "Hlayb As-Suwalma." Badr al-Badr (op cit) and Jamal A.A.Rabia(op cit) instead say this is "Shibli Salama, Mukhtar of Ash Rafiyah." a signatory to *Muson's document.
