TRIBAL SOURCES OF AL KHAMSA FOUNDATION HORSES:

The Shammar, The Ateyban and The Banu Hajr

Egypt's Khedive Abbas II foundation mare, VENUS a Hadban Inzihi foaled around 1890, was bred by the Shammar as was *HADBA, also a Hadban Inzihi born in 1900 and imported by Davenport to the USA. Davenport's mare, *ABEYAH (Abayyan Sharrak) was also bred by the Shammar as was the Blunt's FERIDA, a Muniqi Sbaili. In 1925, Charles Crane imported the Shammar bred Muniqi Sbaili stallion, *MOHALHIL, to the USA. (This Al Khamsa foundation horse is on the "endangered bloodline" list as he has only 3 or 4 living Al Khamsa descendants.) The Kuhaylan Ajuz stallion, MASHAAN, who came from the El Jibur tribe of the Shammar, was imported to Egypt around 1929 and, according to an article by Judith Forbis, he eventually went to the stud of Prince Faisal in Saudi Arabia.

The Blunts purchased the stallion HADBAN, a Hadban Inzahi, in India where he had been taken for racing purposes. Hadban was bred by the Ateyban tribe. According to the Amiri Arabian Stud book of Bahrain the ruling Al Khalifa family got their Kuhaylan-Jellibiet foundation horses from the Ateyban tribe.

Abbas Pasha got the mare SHALFA, Dahman Shawan, from the Banu Hajr tribe. He got the stallion RA'IS, also a Dahman Shawan, from the Ibn Khalifa of Bahrain who apparently got him from the Banu Hajr.

VENUS(KDV) EGYPT(I)

A ca. 1890 chestnut Hadbah-Inzihiyah mare imported in 1893 to Egypt by Hassan Abu Amin Agha, later in the stud of Khedive Abbas II.
NOTES: The above information (except for the birthdate which is an Al Khamsa estimate) is from the RAS History p. 63. Venus is referenced as the dam of Hadba(KDV) in the 1932 official RAS pedigree for *Bint Bint Durra. Entries #9443 and #10811 of Carl Raswan's Index show Venus (with alternate names of Yunis, Hadba, and Shekra Zefra) as sired by a Kuhaylan-Ajuz stallion and bred by the Yunis clan of the Zauba-Shammar.

*HADBA 43 DAVENPORT

A 1900 bay ("red") Hadbah mare of the Shammar, obtained by the Anazah and imported in 1906 in the U.S.A. by Homer Davenport.
By a Shuwayman out of a Hadbah.
NOTES: The above information (except for the birthdate) is from a recent translation of *Hadba's Arabic export document by Jamal A.A.Rabia(in Rabis, Dirks & Dirks, 1992). A recent summary translation of *Hadba's Arabic export document (M.A.El-Fouly, ca. 1967, private communication) adds a substrain for the sire of Shuwayman-Sabbah. The information is consistent with *Hadba's entry in the 1909 stud book of the Arabian Horse Club, which adds the birthdate and shows the strain and substrain of her dam as Hadbah-Inzihiyah. The 1909 Davenport catalog shows the some information as the stud book entry, but shows a birthdate of 1899 and indicates that *Hadba was of the strain of "Akmut Serag" (a signatory to her export document). Entry #3166 in Raswan's Index shows *Hadba as by a Shuwayman- Sabbah of Ibn Sa'dun of the Munifiq, as out of a Hadbah-Inzihiyah of Ibn Hazim of the Sinjara-Shammar and as bred by Ibn Hazim. This entry further has Ibn Hazim giving *Hadba to Badan (or Zedan) Al-'Awaji of the Wuld Sulayman.

*ABEYAH 39 DAVENPORT

An 1896 bay Abayyah-Sharrakiyah mare of Mudaybh Al-Hadib imported in 1906 to the U.S.A. by Homer Davenport.
NOTES: The above information (except for the birthdate) is from a recent translation of *Abeyah's Arabic export document (Badr Al-Badr. 1989, private communication). The information is consistent with the translation published in Davenport's book My Quest of the Arabian Horse in 1909. *Abeyah's entry in the 1909 stud book of the Arabian Horse Club adds a birthdate of 1896, a sire's strain of Abayyan-Sharrak and Shammar tribal affiliation for her breeder. The Davenport 1909 catalog agrees, except the birthdate is shown as 1898.
Entry #74 for *Abeyah in Carl Raswan's Index shows the same information as the stud book entry with the following elaborations: *Abeyah is shown as bred by Ibn Jilad of Al Wadnan of the Sinjara-Shammar by an Abayyan-Sharrak of Ibn Rakhis of the Sinjara-Shammar out of an Abayyah-Sharrakiyah of Mudaybh Al Hadib of the Tuman-Shammar. This entry adds that *Abeyah was later owned by Ibn Zu'ayr of the 'Amarat-Anazah was later owned by Ibn Zu'ayr of the 'Amarat-Anazah who lost her to Mudaybh Al Hadib, original owner of the strain.

FERIDA(BLT) BLUNT

An 1886 bay Mu'niqiyah-Hadrujiyah mare of Mohammed Khuddr Jemal ed Din, who brought her from Deyr to Egypt. Imported in 1891 from Egypt to England by Wilfrid and Lady Anne Blunt.
NOTES: The above information is from Ferida's entry in Weathergy's General Stud Book Vol. XVII p. 808. However, Archer et al: The Crabbet Arabian Stud, pl 96, and Upton: Desert Heritage, p. 123, and The Arab Horse, p. 154, all said to be based on access to records of the Blunts, give Ferida as a Mu'niqiyah- Hadrujiyah of Ibn Sbaili--or a Mu'niqiyah-Sbailiyah--bred by the Shammar and purchased from them by Mohammed Khuddr Jemal ed Din. The Desert Heritage entry shows the purchase date erroneously as 1896, but this is corrected in The Arab Horse. Entry #2712 in Carl Raswan's Index shows the same information as the GSB entry.

*MOHALHIL 1550 CRANE

A 1922 grey Mu'niqi-Sbaili stallion bred by the Shammar and imported ca. 1925 to Egypt by Sheikh Fawzan El Sabek of the Dawasir, Saudi Arabian Minister in Cairo. *Mohalhil was presented to Charles Crane by Sheikh Fawzan El Sabek, and imported in 1929 to the U.S.A. by Crane.
         By a Mu'niqi out of a Mu'niqiyah-Sbailiyah.
NOTES: The above information is from *Mohalhil's Saudi export document and AHR importation records. Carl Raswan's Index entry #6515 shows the same information as AHR Stud Book Vol. IV. [See also Mashaan(RAS),p.74]

MASHAAN(RAAS) EGYPT(II)

A ca. 1925 bay Kuhaylan-Ajuz stallion imported prior to 1928 to Egypt, where he was owned by Sheikh Fawzan El Sabek of the Dawasir, Saudi Arabian Minister in Cairo. Also spelled Michaan.
NOTES: The above information (exept for the dates, which are Al Khamsa estimates) is from the RAS History, p. 29. An interview with Sheikh Abdul Aziz El Sabek, brother of Sheikh Fawzan El Sabek (Saudi Arabian Minister in Cairo), as published in Judith Forbis: Authentic Arabian Bloodstock, p. 134, says that he (Sheikh Abdul Aziz) had purchased and imported Mashaan to Egypt. He further is quoted as saying that Mashaan was from the El Jibur tribe of the Shammar near Deyr as was his sire. Forbis adds that Mashaan was leased to the RAS after his racing career and was returned to the stud of Prince Faisal in Saudi Arabia. Entry #6075 in Carl Raswan's Index shows the same information as the RAS History, and gives a date of ca. 1935, which would have been correct for the time Mashaan went to the RAS. HADBAN(BLT) BLUNT

An 1878 bay Hadban-Inzihi stallion bred by Jakin Ibn Akil, Sheikh of the Daajeyni Atayban and imported in 1883 to India by Sheikh Ali Ibn Amr of Bussoras. Imported in 1884 from India to England by Wilfrid and Lady Anne Blunt
NOTES: The above information is from Hadban's entry in Weatherby's General Stud Book Vol. XV p. 599. It is consistaent with material from Archer et al: The Crabbet Arabian Stud, p. 97, and in Upton: Desert Heritage, p 28, both said to be based on access to records of the Blunts. These references add that Hadban was imported in 1885 to Australia by Mr. Mackay. Entry #3174 in Carl Raswan's Index shows an intermediate owner in that it shows Hadban as sold by Jakin Ibn Ali Sheybeh of the Atayban to Nasir Ibn Akil of the Daajeyni Atayban. Nasir Ibn Akil (Aqayl) is then shown as selling Hadban to Ali Ibn Amir of Bussora.

SHALFA(AP)EGYPT(I)

A ca. 1850 grey (white) Dahmah-Shahwaniyah (Najib) mare bred by Khalil El Hajry imported prior to 1855 to Egypt for Abbas Pasha.
NOTES: The above information (except for the dates, which are Al Khamsa estimates) is from the 1932 certified pedigree for *Bint Serra I from the stud of Prince Kemal El Dine. Lady Anne Blunt: Journals and Correspondence, 1/20/1908, quotes Mutlak, her Muteyr stud manager, as saying that Khalil el Hajry was Sheikh of the Banu Hajr and in her handwritten herd book entry for Feysul reproduced photographically in Upton: Desert Heritage, p. 8, shows the same information as the *Bint Serra I pedigree. Lady Anne called the mare the white Dahmah-Najiba of Khalil El Hajry.
The indentification of the names Shalfa and Dahmeh Nejiba II with this mare is in Raswan's Index entry #9451, which, with entries #7095 and #7715, shows the same information as the *Bint Serra I pedigree, and aditionally show Shalfa as by Qabar, a grey Dahman-Shahwan (Najib) of the Banu Husayn out of a Dahman- Shahwaniyah(Najib). Entry #7095 (#8) further shows Khalil El Hajry as of the Shahwan clan of the Banu Hajr. [See also the entries for Dahmeh Shahwaniyah(APS), p. 54, and Nura El Kebira (APS), p. 79]
