BOURBON – It’s been said that patience is a virtue. And if any two girls varsity basketball teams know about waiting, it’s Triton and Manchester. The two teams battled Tuesday night at Triton, but not before sitting through a triple-overtime junior varsity contest. The varsity game wasn’t pretty, with the two teams combining for 58 turnovers, but the wait was well worth it for the Trojans, who pulled out a 70-64 victory. Despite turning the ball over 35 times, Triton improves to 8-6 overall, while Manchester falls to 10-6. “We sat around a little longer,” said Triton coach Mark Heeter of the delayed start. “We were a little flat at the start of the game. The second and third quarters were the difference for us.” Triton outscored the Squires 45-31 in the middle two quarters. After the Trojans trailed 14-12 after one quarter, 5-foot-10 Trojan center Betsy Salyer tied the game 17 seconds into the second stanza. Triton got buckets from Janell Salisbury and Rachel Speicher, capping off a 6-0 run and giving the Trojans an 18-14 lead with 6:40 remaining in the first half. Manchester junior center Jessica Hicks hit a field goal at the 3:38 mark, and another seven seconds later, cutting a 27-20 Trojan advantage to 27-24. Hicks led all scorers with 32 points on a 12-of-19 shooting performance from the field. She was also 8 of 10 at the charity stripe, pulled down five rebounds and made three steals. Sophomore Heather Terflinger chipped in with 17 points and seven rebounds. Ann Harms added eight points in the loss. “We wanted to shut her down,” said Heeter, when asked of the defense he was trying to play on Hicks. “She played well. I was a little surprised, I didn’t anticipate her to be that quick off the dribble. We knew she was a good shooter. She did a nice job of taking the ball to the basket. She still found a way to get the ball.”
Triton was paced by a quartet of double-figure scorers. Senior Missy Nifong led the Trojans with 26 points on 10-of-18 shooting. She also snared nine rebounds, made a steal and was 4 of 4 at the charity stripe. Salyer added 10 points in the win. Speicher and freshmen Ashli Senff chipped in with 10 points apiece. “She’s been playing well since Christmas break,” said Heeter of Nifong. “She’s been more confident and stepping up.” Manchester coach Keri Nichols was unavailable for comment. Manchester trailed 57-45 after three quarters of play, but after Hicks scored the first three baskets of the final frame, the Squires had the opportunity to win. A steal by Harms with 45 seconds remaining in the game led to a field goal by Terflinger that cut Triton’s advantage to 65-63. After being fouled on the play, Terflinger added the charity toss to cut the lead to one. But as she did all night, Nifong was there when her team needed her. She made good on a field goal attempt with 20 seconds remaining, giving the Trojans a 67-64 lead. Senff added a free throw with 12 seconds left to jump the lead to four, and the Squires were forced to foul. Nifong sealed the deal with two charity tosses with four seconds remaining, accounting for the 70-64 win.
For the game, Manchester was whistled for 14 fouls. The Trojans took advantage by making good on 7 of 9 free throws. Manchester was 15 of 19 at the charity stripe after the Trojans committed 20 fouls.
Manchester (10-6) will be at Lewis Cass tommorrow. Triton (8-6) will be at Northern State Conference rival Jimtown tommorrow.
