NORTH MANCHESTER – Manchester girls basketball coach Keri Nichols called Tuesday’s game with Three Rivers Conference rival Tippecanoe Valley “Slug Fest 2000.” In a 72-41 Manchester win, the two teams combined for 40 fouls and 48 free throws. Three Valley starters – Lynette Wilcox, Erica Pontious, Jennifer Studebaker – fouled out. The 31-point win improves the Squires’ overall record to 11-7 and 4-1 in the TRC. With its 11th consecutive loss, Valley falls to 4-14 and 0-6. The Vikings stayed with the Squires early and only trailed 10-7 after one quarter of play. “I thought we really handled handled their press,” said Valley coach Gary Teel. “Their press ate a lot of people up. I thought we handled their press, that was my biggest fear. We continue to make poor decisions.” Poor decisions on Valley’s part led to 25 turnovers. The Squires, on the other hand, only turned the ball over 13 times. “The last couple games we’ve been in the 20s,” said Nichols of her teams turnovers. “Coming in, our focus was to cut down on mistakes.” A rebound and bucket by Rachel Parker with 7:28 remaining in the second stanza brought the Vikings within three, 12-9, but Manchester went on a 13-0 run, upping its advantage to 23-9 at the 4:44 mark. “There was a spell there where they hit three or four shots in a row and we missed three or four shots in a row,” said Teel. “We called time out to try and take the momentum away. It’s just one of those things. That run was a big part in the game.” Said Nichols: “We’re a team comprised of runs. We knew we had to be patient and get in the groove. Once we got focused it showed on the floor.” The Squires hit 23 of 54 (42.6) shots from the field in the game. More importanly was their 22-of-31 performance at the charity stripe. The Vikings committed 22 fouls. Manchester was whistled for 18 violations. “I’m happy with it,” said Nichols. “Anytime you get to the line that many times, you gotta be happy.” Valley was 16 of 50 (32 percent) from the field and 7 of 17 (41.2 percent) from the free throw line. “We’ve struggled all year shooting,” said Teel. “But once again, we need to make better decisions. Sometimes they think they can see the floor better than they do. I can count at least four or five shots that we missed at point-blank range. To stay in the game we have to make those.” The Squires outscored Valley 26-14 in the third quarter on 9 of 15 shooting from the field, upping their lead to 55-27. Senior Jennifer Jester was 4 of 5 in the frame, all from three-point land. Jester finished the game with 14 points and eight steals. “I was a little peeved at her in the first half,” said Nichols of Jester. “She knows she has the ability to hit four or five in a row. She came back and hit a couple.” Manchester junior forward Jessica Hicks led all scorers with 19 points. Heather Terflinger and Carrie White added 18 and 10 points, respectively, in the win. The Vikings had one double figure scorer, Wilcox, who scored 11 before fouling out. Studebaker tallied seven points and 18 rebounds before fouling out. Jamie Doud and Kathy Prater added six points apiece in the loss.
Manchester will host Class 3A No. 4 Rochester (15-0) Thursday.
“Rochester is a great team,” said Nichols. “We have to come out and play a low turnover game. I think we have the ability to play with them. I wanna be within five or 10 points going into the fourth quarter. If we do that I think we can win the game.”
