By E. Darnell Williams
WABASH, Ind. — Manchester climbed another mountain Saturday night defeating Northfield, 74-33, in the varsity girls' championship game of the Wabash County Basketball Tourney Saturday. In the consolation game, Wabash (1-6) won its first game of the season as sophomore forward Jan Eichenauer put up some big numbers in the Lady Apaches' 59-44 victory over Southwood (3-6) . "We set goals every year and winning the Wabash County tourney was one of them," Manchester head coach Jody Shewman said. The Lady Squires didn't expect to win by such a large margin. On the other hand, they didn't want to come into this game unprepared. "We weren't nervous; we were ready," Shewman said. "All day I told our kids they had to be ready. I thought it would be close because they (Northfield) have a young and talentant team." Megan Eckert, a junior forward and the tourney's Most Valuable Player, lead the Lady Squires scoring crusade with 18 points, 10 of eich came in the first half. Eckert had her ups and downs in this tournament, but she turned the heat on when it counted. "She did a wonderful job tonight compared to Friday's night game when she struggled a little," Shewman said. Teammate Lindsay Seagert also made the all-tournament team. Seagert scored 10 points. Senior guard Jodie Peden also made her presence known as she poured in 11 points, grabbed four rebounds, delivered four assist and four steals. Northfield came out in an unusual shooting slump and nobody on the team scored double figures in the game. Northfield sophomore Staci White, who exploded for 21 points Friday in the first-round victory over Wabash, was hampered Saturday by four quick fouls. Freshman Abby Wilson, who also was named to the all-tournament team, couldn't get into her rhythm and finished with eight points. Ashley Adams led the Lady Norse (2-10) with nine points. In Wabash's victory over Southwood in the consolation game, Eichenhauer, who was named to the all-tourney team, scored 13 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. Junior forward Tiffany Richards also scored 13 points. Senior Amanada Veverka shot 7-of-7 from the charity line, scoring a game high of 13 points for Southwood. Also named to the all-tourney team were Katie Parker of Manchester and Brooke McKee of Southwood.
