Melbourne has a population of over three million people and at first glance  just looks  like any other big city; a closer look reveals the real Melbourne. Traditionally Melbourne lays claim to being  the financial and cultural center of the nation, it does however have a style and elegance all it's own.  The World Health Organization has rated Melbourne one of the least polluted cities for its size in the world and been repeatedly nominated the "worlds most livable city". I guess we must be doing something right,  look at:- Environment Australia Online.
Melbourne has a large following of the fine arts - State Arts Center, St Kilda Rd, probably best known.
The garden city is dotted with numerous parks and gardens, the Royal Botanic ,Carlton,  Treasury and Fitzroy Gardens.  See the Fairy Tree and Captain Cooks Cottage while in the Fitzroy Gardens. Melbourne has  wide tree lined streets and imposing churches like St Patrick's  and St Pauls Cathedral. If you like museums  look at the Science or the National Museum., The Planetarium, Old Melbourne Goal, State Library, Victoria Market, Royal Mint, Town Hall and the Museum of Chinese Australian History all worth a look.

Pollution free electric trams are an ideal means of transport around the city and run to most suburbs. The city is easy to Melbourne tramnegotiate with it's wide streets  built on a grid pattern. Excellent shopping,  huge range of stores,  with a great choice Myer and  Daimaru to name two.  Then there are the arcades and malls - Block Arcade, Centre Point, Bourke StreetMall and Royal Arcade.  You will find Swanky boutiques situated in Chapel St and Toorak.  The city explorer tourist bus leaves Flinders Street Station hourly and takes in the major sites. Chinatown in Little Bourke Street in worth a visit.
"Footy fever"  grips the nation over the winter months,  that's  Aussie Rules Football. The Melbourne Cricket Ground seats around 98,000 fans for the final. The  nation stops for a horse race - the Melbourne Cup which is run on the first Tuesday in November. The Formula One Grand Prix is now hosted in Melbourne.  The international grand slam first leg is held each year in the National Tennis Center at Flinders Park - attracts  a world following.

Melbourne has a huge mix of migrants from many countries, contributing to our rich and diverse culture, infact I believe we have the largest greek community outside Greece.
Food and eating out is one of Melbournes favorite past times. There are literally thousands of excellent cosmopolitan restaurants, markets,  delicatessens, cafes,  BYO's (bring your own liquor). Food from all nations. A visit to Carlton for those who like dining  will be well rewarded where  every type of cuisine is available in an area of a couple of blocks. Eat your way around the world.  Check out the Age Good Food Guide.

Melbourne's  weather is some what fickle,  if you don't like what you are experiencing -  wait ten minutes it's bound to change. Perhaps that's a little unfair as Melbourne generally  enjoys a temperate climate. Spring, late summer and autumn are perhaps the best times to visit or for touring as the weather is more settled and not so hot. Check the weather with the Commonwealth Bureau of Meteorology, Australia

Melbourne  the capitol of Victoria, is the  second smallest state in Australia. Victoria has a wide variety of attractions and all no more than an easy days drive from the city. Explore the gold fields, spectacular coastline and golden beaches with some of the best surfing in Australia . Explore the Great Ocean Road, wineries, mountain country, ski slopes, wool and wheat growing areas.  Mallee scrub and deserts in the north west corner of the state  stretch to the mighty Murray River that borders New South Wales.
