DEVOTIONAL:
CONFETTI LOVE
"Do to others as you would have them do to you." Luke 6:31 niv
While my wife and I were away on our honeymoon two years ago, some
friends from Kellyville Church came over to our new house, broke in, and
trashed the place!
When we returned, we opened the front door and found the living
room full of streamers and signs all around saying things like"SURPRISE"
and "WELCOME HOME." The fact that some friends had taken time out of their
own lives to make us feel special and appreciated gave me some real "warm fuzzies."
The short-sheeting of the bed and glad-wrapping of the toilet seat
gave me a chuckle. I laughed as my wife found the entire CD collection was
in the wrong covers. And I still thought the whole thing was pretty funny
when we found all the wrappers taken off our canned food, so we didn't know
what we were about to eat.
But then I started finding the stockpiles of confetti around the
place! In the cutlery drawer, under lamps, in shoes, filling the
Tupperware, everywhere through the cupboards, pots and pans! Right then I
knew we were in trouble. Everything we touched had little pieces of
multi-color paper hidden in it somewhere.
We had to do confetti-vacuuming about four times a week for the
first few months, and then we could cut it down to 2-3 times per week after
that. We were still finding the stuff up to a year later! It was very traumatic.
I had almost forgotten about it all until a few weeks ago.
On my way out to an appointment, I noticed it was raining and so
grabbed an umbrella from one of the closets. As I stood outside, ready to
run to my car, I opened the umbrella and, you guessed it, was showered by
half a kilo of that paper stuff that I had grown to hate.
I stood there, almost expecting to be annoyed, but instead was
overcome with the same "warm fuzzies" of being appreciated and a sense of
belonging that I had when we arrived home from our honeymoon.
It was then that I realized that each time we take a moment out of
our lives to do something good for somebody else, it has results that live
on much longer than the giver ever thinks. Something that some friends did
on a Sunday evening in September of 1995 brought a warm smile two years
later.
It's those phone calls to friends for no reason but to say hello,
the conversation we have with the person at the train station who's looking
a bit lonely, it's the card we send when someone's feeling sad, the lunch
we pay for when someone's forgotten their wallet, all those selfless acts
of kindness have results that live on for much longer than the moment we
do it.
Often they last for eternity.

SPIRITUAL RESOURCES FOR CHRISTIAN MEN:
We Are Driven, by Dr. Robert Hemfelt, Dr. Frank Minirth, Dr. Paul Meier,
Thomas Nelson Publ., 1991.
The compulsive behaviors America applauds. Discover freedom from
the need to DO more and BE more. When drivenness becomes harmful the
authors refer to it as compulsivity- the mistaken notion that the mastery
of your body, performance, and/or physical environment is the only source
of personal satisfaction and the only answer to your deepest emotional
hungers. Learn how to prevent positive behaviors from becoming addicitons
The New Male Sexuality, by Bernie Zilbergeld, PhD., Bantam Books, 1992,
Written simply, clearly, and with humor. The author of MALE
SEXUALITY has updated his classic work and the subtitle reveals the
premise: "The truth about men, sex, and pleasure." Readers should be aware
that this book is not written from a Christian perspective. It is written
in a straightforward manner and pulls no punches. If you are easily
offended by opinions not reflected in the Christian community--this book is
not for you.
Temptations Men Face, Tom L. Eisenman, InterVarsity Press, 1990.
Straight forward talk on money, affairs, perfectionism and
insensitivity. How do men experience common temptations and what can be
done about them? Insights into a man's perspective on these and other tough
issues. Eisenman discusses the difficulties he and others have had in
avoiding common stumbling blocks in the Christian walk.

THE SECOND SEXIEST THING A MAN CAN DO:
(This is a gift to all men from Karen Krooskos.)
Up until about a year ago, my husband Larry and I led a fairly
quiet life with two wonderful kids, Lauren, 12 and Nico, 3. Then, about a
year ago, we added two 9-yr old relatives who had been living in foster
care. Our romance time was completely obliterated overnight!
That's when I decided that the sexiest thing a man can do is clean
the family kitchen at the end of a long day. The second sexiest thing would
be for him to actually MAKE DINNER.
Now, granted, this is not what I would have thought of as sexy when
I was in my 20's or 30's, but my husband does both and I am the envy of all
my friends.
So, are any of you guys interested in doing a little cooking for
that special woman in your life? This carrot cake recipe is easy/fool proof
and will impress ANYONE who tastes it. Hide the recipe under lock and key
It has powerful qualities that should be saved for special occasions only!
Karen's Carrot Cake
(NOTE: When you start to assemble this, set out the package of
cream cheese and cube of butter on the counter so they can start coming to
room temperature)
Preheat oven to 350 degrees
2 cups sugar
2 cups all purpose flour (that's plain ol' white flour)
1 teaspoon baking soda (the stuff in the orange box with the arm and hammer
on the front)
2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
1 teaspoon salt
4 eggs (if you set 'em on a towel they won't roll onto the floor)
1 cup canola oil
3 cups grated carrots (peel them first, please)
1-1/2 cups walnuts, chopped (if this is a SERIOUS relationship, use two cups)
1 can crushed pineapple, drained, or 2 cups of raisins (pineapple is more moist)
Measure it and dump it in a bowl. Stir until mixed, then pour it
all into a 9x13x2 cake pan. (You don't even need to grease and flour it, it
is so easy.)
Bake it for 40 minutes or until a toothpick stuck in the middle
comes out clean.
Allow to cool. While it is baking, however, you should make the frosting:
1 lb. powdered sugar (buy a fresh box for this recipe--you will use the
whole thing)
1 cube REAL butter (no fake stuff allowed!)
One 8 oz. package of Cream Cheese
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Put the cream cheese, butter and vanilla extract into a bowl, use a
mixer set on low, scraping the sides of the bowl occasionally. When it is
completely blended (about 2 minutes) start adding the powdered sugar about
1/2 cup at a time. Blend until smooth between each addition. Continue until
all the sugar is added.
When the cake is cool, dump this frosting on and slather it thickly
all over the top. Don't try to remove the cake from the pan and don't try
to reserve some of the frosting for anything else. I have been known to add
TWO packages of cream cheese to this, or cut back to half the amount of
powdered sugar, but leave in every bit of the butter!
Now, remember, the sexiest thing in the world is a man who cleans
up the kitchen!
This cake is about winning a woman's heart, both through food and
the act of cleaning. Just make sure you give her a nice heavy protein
dinner before you feed her the cake. The carbohydrates in the cake will
send her blood sugar through the roof and she will fall right asleep
afterwards if you don't prepare her system for this.
And we wouldn't want THAT to happen, would we?

ONE GOOD LAUGH:
A woman explained to her psychiatrist that her husband thought he
was the Lone Ranger. The psychiatrist asked, "How long has this been going on?"
"About twenty years."
"Bring him in. I'll cure him."
The woman nodded and said, "I guess it's the right thing to do. But
Tonto is so good with the children."
THE LAST WORD:
Gotta Be a Champion!
I began cycling back in 1976. Prior to that I was a fat paper boy
who dabbled in racing and building BMX bikes. Then I met Jerry from San
Bernardino, CA. We met at a bike shop in Claremont and talked about the
training races in the Rose Bowl and Griffith Park and the Encino Velodrome.
Jerry was a very likable guy who knew everybody who was anybody and
everybody who was nobody in cycling circles. Since he was a fairly good
racer I began training with him and quickly became acquainted with the best
cyclists in California.
Within a year I was winning races and within two I was state
champion in the 75 mile junior road race held at the old Camp Pendleton
Marine base. The following two years I won National championships in the
Senior category in Northbrook, IL and Kenosha, WI. My peers all marveled at
how I rose so quickly to the top while they were still hobbyists.
Yes, I became proficient quickly and I know why. I carefully
watched those who won races and trained with those whose training methods
worked.
I'm convinced that the Christian race is the same. If we watch and
follow Jesus we will be champions. If we watch and follow others, our
standard is far too low and we're doomed to be only hobbyists. But, praise
the Lord, we don't even have to be lucky enough to be befriended by a nice
guy like Jerry. Rather than needing someone to introduce us to the "big
shots," the greatest Champion on the tour has already asked if we'd like
to go riding!
Come on "wannabe" champions! Let's take advantage of the
invitation. Train with the One who makes the weak strong and the foolish
wise. There's no need to be just a Christian hobbyist. If we ride with Him,
learn His methods and follow Him, we're sure to be winners!
