We traveled to Piedmont, Alabama on April 22, 2001 to check out the Chief Ladiga Trail. It turned out to be a real nice bike ride which started in Piedmont and ended just south of Weaver, Alabama. It was very close to 20 miles one way and did not include a section of paved trail to the east of Piedmont. We will have to add that part when we ride the trail again. And we will do it again.

This is the welcome center at the north end of the Chief Ladiga Trail . There is a parking lot in back of the building. The trail passes by the front. We headed west on the trail and, after crossing a few city streets, found ourselves in the country. With minimum road traffic to listen to, we were serenaded by birds for most of the trip out and back. |
|
All road crossings are clearly marked along the entire route. The trail designers obviously had nothing but safety in mind when they laid this one out. |

There are numerous bridges along the route, but this one had to be the most eye appealing. All bridges have a wood surface and all but a couple are very smooth to cross. Only about two of them at the north end of the ride were bone rattling. |

This old crossing was about 9 miles into the trip. We aren't sure what this used to be. But Vickie couldn't pass up a picture opportunity. |

|
We passed a scenic lake where turtles and egrets were doing whatever turtles and egrets do. Seems like most of the best scenery was around the mid point of the ride (not that the whole trip wasn't nice). It's just that the middle part was the best. |
|
The trail ends about two miles south of Weaver. There is an extremely well maintained park there. Looks like a great place for a post ride picnic. Maybe next time. |

We aren't sure if it's a smile because we are having so much fun, or if it's a grimace considering it's 20 miles back to our car. |
