We had a wonderful german shepherd, who had to be put down due to old ge and after that a bull terrier, who was a character but not really a good neighborhood pet. Duchess found us one stormy night and we had her for about 10 years. Now that I'm alone and have more time to spend with a dog I will be ready to start adoption proceedings as soon as the remodeling of my house is finished and I locate the right dog.

Yesterday (8/7/00) I found a German Shepherd that was injured (found in Dacula, GA). She was very weak and her front right leg was exteremly swollen and useless. I immediately took her to the vet I use for my own dogs, and she is still there. They have hecked her over and say she seems to be healthy everywhere except for the infection that developed under her right leg. The x-rayed it this morning and there was no bone damage. The only remaining concern they have is that once the infection is gone, sh may not be able to regain the use of her front right leg and it may need to be amputated. (Apparently the infection has been present for some time and has caused drastic muscle atrophy). I asked the vet if they thought putting her down was a viable alt rnative and they said absolutely not. They said she should be able to make a full recovery (although what initially caused the infection is still a mystery) even if the leg has to be amputated. My problem is that in my current personal situation, I do n t have the time, space or money needed to help get this dog back on it's feet (be it 3 or 4). I have gone the usual route of logging her in at animal control and placing her as found in local papers, but I have a feeling she was "dumped". I have contact d several different organizations but have either heard no's, or have not heard back yet (a lot of them have voice mails). If anyone would be kind enough to point me in the right direction, it would be greatly appreciated. My vet is suggesting I take th dog home by Thursday and to be quite honest I'm not even sure where I'm going to keep her. (I'm working on that one). Thanks in advance for any assistance! - Monica

I have a 2 year old German Shepherd that we adopted form the humane society that is the sweetest dog, we also have an 8 month old german shepherd,the 2 year old though loves my fiance' and myself but for some reason does not like my 15 year old son, so my mother is going to take the dog, it really upsets me beacuse i thought he would really like my son. I dont know if a teenager or someone abused him and that is why he doesnt like him. But I am also concerned that he may not like my stepfather or my mother then i dont know what we will do with him, because he has became really aggressive with our neighbors and so that is why I am worried he may not like them either. I really hate to see him end up back at the pound but I cannot leave him alone with my son i the house. Are there any rescue shelters in my area? I live in Panama City Beach, Fl. We are looking for a large-boned female german shepherd, who is great with a "hands-on" (extremely affectionate) child and cats. We are in the process of purchasing a home w th a large backyard we will put a 6 foot privacy fence around. (In Suwanee) The dog would sleep inside,and recieve excellent medical care. We have both always been pet owners, and realize it is a permanent (dog's lifetime) committment, provided the dog is not dangerous of course. Love the GSD hate to see any without wonderful homes just so you know all GSD do not need a fenced yard as long as they have a loving owner. I am a GSD fan from a long way back. As a child, my nanny was a dainty black and silver GSD named Apopka. I called her Pahka. :) I'd love to have a GSD now, maybe even a pair, but as I live in an apartment, it's not really feasible. Hopefully, once my husband is out of law school, we'll be buying a house and then be able to have dogs. Y'all are doing great work and I wish you lots of luck with it! I'm a volunteer with the Henry County Humane Society, so I sympathize with what you're doing. I'm wonde ing if you have any volunteer opportunities that I might be able to participate in...that way I could at least be around my favorite breed. :)

It's been a while since I had a dog and never had this problem. I was looking for information, my dogs stool was a pale yellowish color and I heard about a desease that turns the stools white. Can this be the same? We do not feed him extras and it being the holiday he had cooked egg whites and some turkey liver. Can that cause that? He appears to be in good health. I hate to take him to the vets if it's nothing, because I'm in transision between jobs, but if this is serious can you let me know. Sorry to bother you. Thanks, pepe

I bought a German Shepherd puppy who is now 6 months old. I find it really upsetting that people can just 'dispose' of them so easily. I can't ever imagine being seperated from my boy! However you are doing a wonderful job. If I had the room I would take a dog now, but I know I definetley will n the future.

I live too far away to look into a gsd rescue (I live near phila., pa) but am looking into adopting a gsd nearer to home. I was just visiting all the gsd sites out there. Keep up the good work! If you are able to, I'd like to just get your feedback about gsd and how you feel they could get along with 2 cats, a parrot (a macaw) and eventually children. I have heard from people that they are good with them (as long as they are socialized properly but someone said that "you have to always be on gaurd with them". Now, I realize that normally you just need to make sure that nothing happens as they are animals but I'm just wondering if there are gsd out there who I will be able to"trust" for the mos part. I love them and am eagerly looking to adopt one in November but want all the info possible on them that I can get. Thanks for you time. Natalie
