Helen M. Akers, 96, the mother of Ethel Fuis of Norris, died Jan. 4 at Methodist medical center of Oak ridge. Mrs. Akers had been a resident of Regency Health Care Center near Norris.
Mrs. Akers was born Feb. 10, 1897, in Warrensville, Ohio to the late Edward and Jenny Hughes Castle. She and her late husband, M.J. Akers, were married Dec. 24, 1919, in Warrensville. She also had lived in Oak Ridge for 46 years.
A homemaker, she was a member of Kern Memorial United Methodist Church in Oak Ridge where she was a member of the Martha and Mary Circle. She also belonged to the AARP.
A favorite past time was crocheting. She also enjoyed being with her family.
An infant son, two sister and a brother, also preceded her in death.
Survivors include a son-in-law, Frank Fuis of Norris; sister, Mildred Wentz; sister and brother-in-law, Doris and Harry Fowler, all of Brecksville, Ohio; grandchildren, Gary Fuis and his wife, Stacey, of LaHonda, CA; Anita Beets of Knoxville; Barbara and Brian Kruse of Huntersville, NC; Jeff Shepherd and wife Sara, of Oak Ridge; Brian Fuis and wife Eydie, of Las Vegas, NV; six great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
Services were held Thursday at Martin Oak Ridge Funeral Home with the Rev. E.C. Vestal Jr. officiating. Burial was at Oak Ridge Memorial Gardens.
