Wallace Cantrell, 82, of Eagle Bend Drive, Clinton, died Sunday at Anderson County Health Care Center after a long illness. Funeral services were held Monday night in the Holley-Gamble Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Samuel Dean and the Rev. Raymond Sanderson officiating. Burial was Tuesday morning at Sunset Cemetery.
Mr. Cantrell retired as vice president of First American Bank in March of 1975. He had worked there for 32 years.
He was active in the Clinton Civitan Club and was chairman of the Clinton Housing Authority for 15 years. He also taught the Men’s Sunday school class at First Baptist Church in Clinton for 25 years.
Mr. Cantrell earned a degree in chemical engineering at the University of Tennessee and taught school in Anderson County before going to Union-Peoples Bank. He was at Claxton when he resigned to accept the position with the bank on Feb. 8, 1943. He also taught at Scarboro School.
He was a commissioned officer with the ROTC and served with U.S. Army Reserve.
After his retirement, he raised Kentucky saddle horses and showed them in area horse shows. He also enjoyed boating and reading.
MR. Cantrell was the son of the late Charles W. and Hessie Wallace Cantrell. He was born in the Glen Alpine community of Anderson County.
He and his wife, Fern Nelson Cantrell, were married on July 7, 1934, in Williamsburg, KY.
Survivors include his wife; a daughter and son-in-law, Betty Lynn and Charles E. Smith; a son and daughter-in-law, James. W. Jr. and Jessie Cantrell, all of Clinton; a brother, Hubert Cantrell of Clinton; two grandchildren, Lisa Smith of State College, PA and Kevin Cantrell of Clinton.
Two sisters, Mossie C. Lowery and Mary Butcher, and a brother Charles W. Cantrell Jr. died earlier.
