Leland W. Evans, 84, of Eagle Bend Road, Clinton, died Wednesday afternoon at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge.
Mr. Evans was born June 8, 1908, in Campbell County to the late Hugh and Texas Faye Cooper Evans. His wife, Lois Massengill Evans, died April 27, 1989. Mr. and Mrs. Evans were married Oct. 3, 1933 in Caryville.
For many years the Evans family lived on Moore Street in Clinton before building a new home on Eagle Bend.
The Evanses had 10 sons, including two sets of twins. Mr. Evans retired in 1972 from his business, Evans Contracting Co. His sons grew up working with their father, and upon retirement, formed their own construction companies. The family built many buildings in the Clinton-Oak Ridge area.
After retirement, Mr. and Mrs. Evans enjoyed traveling over the United States in their motor home. They were members of the National Campers and Hikers Association, Chapter TALAHI.
He was a member of Second Baptist Church in Clinton.
Survivors include sons and daughters-in-law; Clifford and ZoElla Evans of Louisville; Bob and Sue Evans of Powell; Bill and Mary Evans, Von and Janice Evans, Kenneth and Mary Evans, Tommy and Bobbie Evans, Jimmy and Pat Evans; Ronald Evans of Knoxville; Donald Evans and Larry and Angee Evans, of Clinton; 23 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; sisters, Pearl Rice, Irene Evans and Magadaline Sharp, all of Caryville; brothers, Dewey Evans and Bedford Evans of Caryville.
Services were held Saturday at Second Baptist Church with the Rev. Jim McPherson and the Rev. George Williams officiating. Burial was in Sunset Cemetery. Holley-Gamble Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
