Walter E. Fischer




Walter Edward Fischer, Doctor of Jurisprudence, 84, of Red Bud Drive, Clinton, died Oct. 6 at Fort Sanders Regional Medical Center.

A native of Scranton, PA, he attended the University of Pennsylvania Wharton School of Business, the University of North Carolina, the University of Newark Law School and the University of Tennessee Law School, where he received his law degree in 1942.

Mr. Fischer practiced law in Clinton for 31 years before his retirement in 1973. He was Clinton City Judge in 1966. In 1971, he was chosen as Chancellor of the Second Chancery Division. He also served 20 years as Assistant Attorney General.

Mr. Fischer also served on the Clinton School Board, Clinton Housing Authority and the Clinton Utilities Board, Melton Hill Regional Industrial Development Association, Powell-Clinch Utility District, Clinton Civitan Club, Oak Ridge Elks Lodge and the VFW.

He also served with the Navy in the Pacific Theatre during World War II, receiving a Purple Heart. Mr. Fischer was a member of the Memorial United Methodist Church, where he taught the Men’s Bible Class.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Helene, and brothers, Oscar, Monroe and Clifton.

Survivors are his wife, Doris Mundy Fischer of Clinton; daughter, Mary C. (Connie) Fishcher and son-in-law, James E. Detwiler of Winter Springs, FA; brother, Philip G. Fischer of Scranton, PA; nieces and nephews.

Graveside services were held Saturday afternoon at Tennessee Valley Memory Gardens in Claxton with the Rev. Bill Rowland officiating. Holley-Gamble Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be made to Memorial Methodist Church, North Main Street, Clinton, or a favorite charity.
