Charles William Hammons




A life-long Anderson County resident, Charles William Hammons, 58, died Saturday, Aug. 18 at the Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge.

Hammons was the former road superintendent with the Anderson County Highway Department.

He worked many years with the highway department, during that time serving as assistant superintendent and supervisor, as well as holding the superintendent position.

Hammons was a graduate of Clinton High School and had been a Clinton resident for some time.

He was a member of the Longfield Baptist Church of Lake City, where he was the former director of the Training Union and Assistant Sunday School teacher.

He spent four years in the United States Air Force, and was a veteran of the Korean War.

He was the son of the late William and Velma Hammons.

He is survived by his wife, Helen Hopson Hammons of Clinton; daughters and sons-in-law, Freddy and Lisa Ann Cornett of Clinton and Marshall and Mary Louise Crowley of Toledo, OH; son and daughter-in-law, Charles Jr. and Chris Hammons of Clinton; eight grandchildren; sisters, Mary Lou Arthur and Mandy Smith, both of Clinton; step-mother, Pearl Martin of Lake City; step-brothers, Clifton Hammons of Clinton and Clyde Hammons of Lake City; mother-in-law, Birdie Hopson of Clinton and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral was held Monday, Aug. 20 at the Holley-Gamble Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Mack Smith and the Rev. Larry Watts officiated.

Burial was at the Tennessee Valley Memory Gardens. Holley-Gamble Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
