Mary Bernice Long Kanipes, 92, of the Dutch Valley community, died Monday in Chattanooga Memorial Hospital.

the daughter of Robert Walker and Molly Leinart Long, she was born Dec. 19, 1901, in Anderson County. Mrs. Kanipes was a member of Dutch Valley Missionary Baptist Church. In her earlier years, she was very active in the Democratic party in the county.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husbands, George Dagley and Fred Kanipes; daughters, Eloise Kanipes and Juanita Pugh; sisters, Later Freels, Sarah Etta Jones, Ella Leinart, Delberta Wilson and Julia Scarbrough; and brothers, Thomas, Samuel, Edward, James “Jim” and John Long.

Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Burl and Etta Kanipes of Chattanooga and Kenneth and Shirley Kanipes of Knoxville; two daughters and a son-in-law, Martha Turnbill and Kathleen and Fred Smith, all of Clinton; brothers, Joe B. Long and William “Bill” Long, both of Clinton; sisters, Laura Justice of Fowler, IN, and Lorene Holbrook of Clinton; 19 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and several great-great-grandchildren>

Funeral service was 2 pm Wednesday in Weatherford Mortuary with the Rev. William P. Colter officiating. Burial will be in the R.W. Long Cemetery in Dutch Valley.
