Minnie Joplin Lankford




Minnie Joplin Lankford, 85, of Oak Ridge, died Aug. 3 at her home. She was the mother of Gerald Lankford of Clinton.

A homemaker, Mrs. Lankford was a longtime resident of Oak Ridge. She moved there in 1944 with her husband Lyle G. Lankford, whom she married March 17, 1929, in Texas. Mr. Lankford retired in 1973 from the Y-12 Plant of Union Carbide Nuclear Division.

She was a charter member of Glenwood Baptist Church but in later years became a member of Fairview Baptist Church in the Solway community. Mrs. Lankford was a member of the Burchfield Garden Club and enjoyed gardening at her home.

She was born Feb. 12, 1908, in Cleburne, Texas, to the late William J. and Elizabeth Brewer Joplin. A son, Lyle Duane Lankford, died in 1967.

In addition to her husband and Clinton son, she is survived by a son, Troy Wayne Lankford of Nashville; six grandchildren, Duana Lankford of Atlanta and Gerald Lankford of Cary, NC; Lyle Lee Lankford of Claxton; Sharon Lankford Nabors of Memphis and Laura Lankford Short and Keith Lankford, both of Nashville; and nine great-grandchildren.

The funeral was held Friday in the chapel of Weatherford Mortuary with the Rev. Larry Webster and the Rev. Milton Bolton officiating. Burial was Saturday at Oak Ridge Memorial Park.
