Gertrude C. McGhee, 83, of Clinton, died Saturday morning in Briarcliff Health Care Center. She had been ill since June 18, 1993.
The daughter of John Wiley and Alice Webb Cooper, she was born Dec. 21, 1911, in Campbell County. She and her husband, James S. McGhee, had been married 63 years at the time of his death Feb. 18, 1993. Mrs. McGhee worked in Magnet Mills during the 1930s and 1940s. She also was a member of Sinking Springs United Methodist Church.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Mona Kaye McGhee, three brothers and a sister.
Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Mary Alice and Bennie L. Cox of Clinton; two sons and daughters-in-law, Eddie and Kay McGhee of Clinton and James A. and Claudia McGhee of Claxton; two granddaughters, Leigh Ann C. Brandon and her husband, Michael of Portland, MA and Angela McGhee of Claxton; sisters, Edna Long of Clinton and Mabel Burchfield of Maryville; brothers, Vernon and Ulys Cooper of Clinton; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral service was Monday in Holley-Gamble Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. Tom Harris and the Rev. Larry Best officiating. Burial was Tuesday in Sunset Cemetery.
