Carolyn Hall Medley Retired teacher, playwright

Carolyn Hall Medley, 74, of Clinton, died Monday, Oct. 26, 1998, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge.

Mrs. Medley attended Agnes Scott College and was a graduate of the University of Tennessee. In the late 1940s she had a radio talk show, and later taught English at Clinton High School.

For the 1986 Tennessee Homecoming, she wrote "Whoever Heard of Burrville" and for Clinton's centennial celebration in 1990, she wrote "How Does A Town Have A Birthday Party?"

She was the daughter of Deane and Dr. James Smith Hall.

A civic leader in the area, Mrs. Medley was a longtime member and was once president of Timely Topics in Clinton and a member of the American Cancer Society, Friends of the Library and Memorial United Methodist Church, where she had taught Sunday school. She was known for her wit, her sense of humor and her caring smile, her family said.

She is survived by her husband of 51 years, Lamar Medley; her sons, James E. Medley and his wife, Sarah, and Mark Medley and his wife, Donna; her daughter, Deane Medley; five grandchildren, Harper Pietrzak, Ben Medley, Anne Medley, Patty Medley and Corey Medley; and by her sister, Jane Fox Komarek.

The funeral will be held at 8 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 28, at Memorial United Methodist Church in Clinton with the Rev. Warren Wattenbarger officiating.

A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 29, at Sunset Cemetery in Clinton. Pallbearers will be James E. Medley, Mark Medley, Ben Medley, Jim Lawrence, Dr. Dan Thomas and Bob Wysor. Honorary pallbearers are H.G. McGinley, Dr. P.J. Wenk, Joe Dailey, Jim Bob Dailey, James Nelson Hall, Dow Burton, Garnett Kincaid and Joe Davis.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the church. The family requests any memorials be in the form of donations to Memorial United Methodist Church, 323 N. Main St., Clinton, TN 37716. Holley-Gamble Funeral Home in Clinton is handling arrangements.
