Gladys Scarbrough Van Hook




Gladys Scarbrough Van Hook, age 78, a resident of Oliver Springs, passed away Monday, Feb. 18, 2002.

She was born May 28, 1923, in Maryville to the late Lee Scarbrough and wife Alta Henry Scarbrough.

She married the late S. J. Van Hook Jr., M.D. in 1947. She graduated from the Knoxville General Hospital School of Nursing as a registered nurse in 1944 and served briefly in the Nursing Corps at the Veterans Hospital in Johnson City.

She was active in First Baptist Church of Oliver Springs where she sang in the choir and taught Sunday School.

She was active in the Democratic Party and enjoyed, over the years, campaigning for many Democratic candidates on all levels.

She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, S. J. Van Hook III and wife Betty of Oliver Springs; Joseph H. Van Hook and wife Teresa of Oliver Springs; her grandchildren, S. J. Van Hook IV of Atlanta; Jennifer Lynne Van Hook of Cookeville; Ashley Marie Van Hook and Joseph P. Van Hook, both of Oliver Springs. She is also survived by her special niece, with whom she grew up, Jeanne Tipton Mason and her husband, Jimmy of Rockwood; one surviving sister, Cora Long and husband, Hardin of Georgia; numerous nieces, nephew, grandnieces and grandnephews, and cousins.

The family will receive friends 6-8 pm Wednesday, Feb. 20, 2002 at First Baptist Church of Oliver Springs. The funeral service will follow at 8 pm Wednesday, Feb. 20, 2002 at First Baptist Church of Oliver Springs with her nephew the Rev. Carson Scarbrough and the Rev. Tony Rutherford officiating.

Graveside services will be 11 am Thursday, Feb. 21, 2002 at Anderson Memorial Gardens.

Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church of Oliver Springs, in lieu of flowers.
