Bertha Vinsant, 97, of 1000 Richmond Road, Lexington, Ky., died June 6 at Breckenridge Health Care Center in Lexington. She was the last surviving child of John W. and Kiziah Brown Vinsant's 13 children. She was a frequent visitor in Clinton before the death of her sisters, Mary V. McGhee and Martha V. McGhee.
Other brothers and sisters who preceded her in death were Henry R. and James G. Vinsant, both of Jacksboro; Ida V. LaMance of Birmingham; Florence V. Ingle of Knoxville; Dr. Robert S.
Vinsant of Memphis; Rose V. Nicholson, Nora V. Myers, and a twin sister Lula V. Marlowe, all of Kentucky. A brother, Earnest, and
a sister, Gracie Vinsant died while infants.
Miss Vinsant was born on Sept. 18, 1892. She was reared near Jacksboro on a large farm where her grandfather had settled when he came to East
Tennessee from Virginia. The cemetery where she was buried adjoined the original farm. She had said that the Dutch family name was originally VanZandt.
Miss Vinsant was a University of Tennessee graduate and a member of the First United Methodist Church in Lexington, the Republican Women's Club, and the Kentucky Mountain Club. While living in Campbell
County, she attended Mount Zion United Methodist Church where she always returned for family reunions in August.
Survivors include area nephews, James S. McGhee of Clinton;
A.L. Vinsant of Knoxville, and nieces, Annie McWane of Clinton, Ruth V. Cain of Jacksboro, and Aileen V. Adkins of Blount County, and several other nieces and nephews, great- and
great-great-nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Friday morning at Kerr Funeral Home Chapel in Lexington. Burial was Friday afternoon at Mount Zion UMC Cemetery near Jacksboro.
