Niagara Falls in Winter

HORSESHOE FALLS (Canada)

If you have never been to Niagara Falls: GO, if you get the chance. Summer is busier, but lots of fun. Winter is a bit sleepier, possibly some bad weather; but beautiful if you time it right (between snow and ice storms). We were pleased to get a lovely room on the 20th floor of the Marriott Fallsview in January. And, all room have an excellent view of both the American and Horseshoe (Canadian) Falls and Goat Island, which is between the two. Rainbow Bridge is visible near the American Falls. Off in the distance above the Horseshoe Falls is the Peace Bridge, which is easily seen at night from the lights. Both falls are lighted at night. During the day if the sun shines, you can see a rainbow. Our first day was overcast, and thus, no rainbow...but one appeared on Sunday afternoon (above), and it was beautiful!

Close-Up of the American Falls

The Niagara Parkway is called "the prettiest Sunday afternoon drive in the World." And, I have to agree. It is 56 kilometers (35 miles) from Fort Erie to Niagara-on-the-Lake (Ontario). Along the way you will find:

Historic Fort Erie
Niagara Parks Marina
King's Bridge Park
Dufferin Islands Nature Area
Niagara Parks Greenhouse
Table Rock House Plaza, Journey Behing the Falls
Victoria Park Complex
Maid of the Mist Boat Ride
Oakes garden Ampitheatre
Niagara Spanish Aero Car, "ride over the whirlpool"
Whirlpool Public Golf Course
Niagara Glen Nature Area
Niagara Parks Botanical Gardens
Power Plants
Floral Clock and Lilac Gardens
Queenston Heights Park
Mackenzie Heritage Printery
Historic McFarland House
Historic Niagara-on-the-Lake
Fort George
Find out more at Info Niagara.

A Niagara River Recreation Trail runs parallel to the Parkway. The People Mover stops at several of the most popular spots from the Whirlpool to the Gardens, with several stops in between. Lots of alternative ways to get around, and all very enjoyable. [This was written when I was still able to use crutches. Now, I will have to find out if there is accessible transportation available and update this site.]

Best Free Exhibit: The Daredevil Gallery is located inside the Imax Theatre lobby. There is no admission to this wonderful exhibit of artifacts used by those who dared to challenge the falls! [We did also enjoy the Imax Niagara film while we were there.]
