A Day in Rome

Rome is a great place to do a walking tour.
Some of the sites we got to see were:
the Colosseum (Flavian Amphitheatre)
the Arch of Constantine
the Pantheon which is a well preserved Roman temple built in 27 BC by Marcus Agrippa
Piazza Navona with its three fountains, especially the Bernini fountain of the Four Rivers
Piazza Venezia dedicated to King Victor Emanuel II and Italy's Tomb of the Unknown Soldier
and the ruins of the Roman Insula (apartments) and the Roman Forum

We stopped to rest and to eat some good Italian pasta and seafood near the Trevi fountain. There is so much here that you can't possibly see a lot in only one day. But, since we were going on to visit our son and his wife in Sicily, we had to leave. We bought a nice book about Rome filled with many beautiful pictures and information for only 14,000 lira (that's about 8 dollars).

We hired a guide to help us negotiate the cobbled streets of Rome as I am using an Amigo scooter for mobility. There are very few good cutouts in this ancient city, and even our guide was frustrated when the ones that existed were blocked by parked vehicles. But, we took our time and very did well getting around Rome. The scooter performed amazingly well. Without the scooter, I could never have seen so much of Rome. We had a wonderful time, and I could go at my own pace. We had the added advantage of having our guide negotiate prices for us and he was a big help in keeping the peddlers away. Able bodied people should be able to manage well on their own with a map and a good guide book. There are ruins, statues, fountains, food, and things for sale everywhere.
