The Bayliss Family

Edward BAYLISS was born in England about 1785-90. He married Sarah FRENCH in England, probably London. About 1830-31 he came to America from London, bringing his family except the eldest son, George. They located first in Oneida County, New York, and later in Licking County, Ohio, where they located on as farm near Newark. Later, Thomas and Edward, returned to New York state where they lived the remainder of their lives. About 1832, the eldest son, George, with his wife and infant daughter, Mary, came to America, living in Cayuga County, New York before settling in Licking County, Ohio.
Edward's son, James, and two sone of Matilda (BAYLISS) HARDING, William and Joseph, served in the Union army during the Civil War.
The children of Edward BAYLISS and Sarah FRENCH were George, Matilda, Thomas, Edward Jr., James, Joseph, and Anna.
George BAYLISS was born in England about 1810. He married Mary LAUN in England, probably about 1830-31. Mary was the daughter of John Adam LAUN of Spitalfield, London, England. A letter written to his daughter, who lived in Newark, Ohio at the time, bears the address, 3 Revenrow, Spitalfield, London.
About 1832-33, George BAYLISS, wife and daughter came to America. He was a carpenter and was employed in towns along the Erie and Ohio canals. His wife died in 1849 ? and was buried in the Cedar Hill Cemetery. The family moved to Groveport, Ohio and later to Nelsonville, Ohio where George BAYLISS married Mrs. SKINNER. He died in Nelsonville about 1873.

Sarah, born Dec. 28, 1833 in New York, married John TYHURST Dec. 30, 1852, died July 24, 1905.
George, born 1835, married Mildred, died in Goldthwaite, Texas.
Eliza, born Sept. 29, 1837, in Auburn, New York, married E. C. WASHBURN, died May 21.
Matilda, died young.
Anna, born Dec. 11, 1847, in Newark, Ohio, married Charles HAROLD Dec. 24, 1866, died Feb. 8, 1920.
Edward, born 1850, married Ella STYERS ?, died ?.
