premature babies as well!
Bryce was born at 28 weeks 5 days gestationon May 21, 1997 weighing 2 lb. 12 oz. and
measuring 15-1/4 inches. Here he is on the warming table minutes after his
birth. After being evaluated and found medically stable, he was placed in
an isolette to help him maintain body temperature. Most if not all
premature babies weighing under 4 lbs do not have enough subcutaneous fat to
keep them warm on their own.
This picture was taken 11 days after Bryce's birth, at his lowest weight of 2 lb. 7 oz.
As is normal with prematures Bryce lost weight the first few days of life.
Don't worry about the IV lines in his scalp; they're just delivering
fluids and lipids to help Bryce grow until he is able to take in enough expressed breast milk by gavage (tube) feedings to gain weight on his own!
Here's Bryce getting ready to get out of the isolette to say Happy Birthday to his
mommy. He's growing, but still needs the incubator for body warmth, so all of his
extra energy can go into getting bigger. Age is 3 weeks.>
This picture was taken on a very special day-- Bryce passed the 3 pound mark, weighing
3 lb. 1 oz. on his mama's birthday!! He is still receiving feedings by
gavage, but no longer needs IV's!!
Bryce is receiving his very first bottle of expressed breast milk! He did very well,
consuming most of this feeding by bottle, then the rest by gavage! Age is 4-1/2 weeks
Mommy and Bryce sure do love each other. This picture is taken on Bryce's first day
out of the isolette into a regular hospital bassinnette. He weighs 4 lbs
now and is eating about 34 cc of breast milk per feeding. At this time
every other feeding was by bottle and the rest gavage.
Age 5 weeks 1 day
Bryce came home weighing 4 lb. 6 oz. measuring 17-1/2 inches long on July 4, 1997,
giving the U.S. holiday of Independence Day new meaning for our family.
He's pictured here with his 3 year old brother, Kyle.
Pictured with Kyle in late August, 1997, Bryce now weighs 8 lb. 12 oz.
He and his brother are best buddies, and mom can't go anywhere with Bryce that
Kyle doesn't follow!
