Who Are We ?
Illawong Bush Fire Brigade is a group of people with an interest in Illawong and protecting it from bush fires.
Who Can Join ?
Membership is open to anyone over the age of 16.
You will need to be :
Prospective members are asked to attend at least 8 Sunday training sessions and 2 monthly meetings during the 3 month probation period. This helps new members to develop a better understanding of how the Rural Fire Service operates and what the expectations are of its members.
Thereafter, members are expected to attend at least 1, preferably 2, training sessions per month and the monthly general meeting.
New members join as "blue helmets" i.e. trainees.
Uniforms
Uniforms will be issued once a member has formally joined the brigade.
During the probation period, prospective members are asked to attend Sunday training sessions wearing strong clothing, preferably overalls, and boots.
Training
Training is held every Sunday.
The duration is normally from 09.00 - 12.00 but may extend to 13.30, depending on the activity.
Members are trained to high standards in Bush Fire Fighting techniques. Additional training may also done in Advanced Fire Fighting , Structural Fire Fighting, First Aid as well as the use of Breathing Apparatus equipment.
Formal training courses are also run. These may be scheduled during week nights, weekends or a combination.
Attending Fires
Blue helmets do not attend or respond to fires.
Blue helmets are encouraged to assist with Hazard Reduction (HR) exercises conducted by the Illawong Brigade.
This HR experience is important to obtain in order to progress to ‘white helmet’ rank.
White helmet members provide the core response group for attending fires, under the direction of an Brigade officer. This can be a Deputy Captain , Senior Deputy Captain or the Brigade Captain.
Other Brigade Events
The Illawong Brigade provides support for many community events.
New members are encouraged to support the Brigade by attending these events.
