The Needham Family

Christopher Needham is thought to be the first of our Needham line in America. Needham family researches have reached different conclusions concerning Christopher Needham but most agree he is indeed our immigrant.

Christopher Needham was born about 1595 in England. From a land record recorded in the Maryland Hall of Records (ABH folio 186) on January 15, 1651, we find that he was given land for transporting his wife and two sons, Edward and *Thomas, and himself to America. He was issued 1000 acres of land on the Potomac River in order to promote colonization. Records indicate that his son Edward, settled in Accomack County, Virginia.

Thomas Needham settled in Elizabeth City, County, Virginia. An area, which is now the city of Hampton. We do not know whom he married but from his will made on March 29, 1690, we know he had two sons. One of which was *Thomas Needham Jr.

Thomas Needham Jr. was born between 1675 and 1678 in Elizabeth City, County, Virginia. About 1702 he married Margaret Bayley, the daughter of Walter and Margaret Bayley. About 1730, Thomas Jr. transferred his lands to his eldest son, Christopher and moved the rest of his family to Pasquotank County, North Carolina. We don't know when Thomas Jr. died but he made his will and it was witnessed in October, 1740. He must have died before October 7, 1743 because there was an inventory of his estate made on that date. All their children were born in the Elizabeth City County, Virginia area.

Thomas and Margaret had six children:

John Needham Sr. was born about 1708 in Elizabeth City County, Virginia. He married Elizabeth Brothers about 1740 in Pasquotank County, North Carolina. John Needham was a farmer and Stockman. He has no known military record. He was affiliated with the Episcopal Church. Elizabeth was born about 1716 in or around Pasquotank County, North Carolina. Her father's name was William Brothers. John Sr. died sometime before December 5, 1754 because his estate was inventoried on that date. Elizabeth remarried sometime after 1755 to James Griffin.

It lists Henry Needham, Henry Jr. (which must be Henry Arvell “Dick”), John R., Peter, Rebecca, Tallie (which must be our Tollie). There were so many typos made during transcription from the old hand written records. It also lists the names Letha Needham, who was Henry’s 2nd wife after Ida died, Ben Needham and Matilda Needham. Ben is listed as a 14 year old cousin who was living in the household. Matilda was listed as 1 year and 3 months old. She must have been Henry and Letha’s daughter, named after Henry’s mother.

It is thought that Henry and Letha had six children together. Henry died January 19, 1937. This news item is from an old Eufala, Oklahoma newspaper on the internet.

The Dodson Branch

Charles Dodson born around 1649. Resided in Old Rappahannock County, Virginia (which later became Richmond County). He was first found in the records as having leased land in July, 1680. He died in Richmond County, Virginia in 1704 or 1705. His will named his wife Ann and eight children: Charles, Jr., Thomas, Bartholomew Richard, William, John, Lambeth, Ann and Elizabeth. Lambeth had a son named John, who had a son named Samuel, who had a son named *Samuel Dodson, Jr.

Samuel Dodson, Jr. was born in 1774 in Virginia. He married three times. It is thought his first wife was Mary "Polly" Dalton, the daughter of Reuben and Elizabeth Dalton of Grayson County, Virginia. Samuel's first two sons were born in Virginia. He then moved to Puncheon Camp Creek, Tennessee, where he acquired land which he shared with his sons as they matured. After Polly died, Samuel married Susan Clontz. She was still living in 1850. It is not known how many children she had by Samuel, but the older children were her step-children. We can be certain that Polly was Joel's mother. Samuel later married Sarah McAnally Burns.

John Dodson was born in 1820 in Grainger County, Tennessee. He married Martha "Patsy" Grady on November 10, 1843 in Grainger County, Tennessee. Martha was also born in Tennessee around 1823. John was a farmer according to the Tennessee state census. Martha was listed as his wife on all of them up until the 1870 census. John and his children were listed without a wife on that one, so Martha died some time before 1870 but after 1862, the year Rosa, her youngest child, was born.

John and Martha had the following children:
1. Kenney Dodson....Born September 8, 1844 in Grainger County, Tennessee.
2. *Matilda Dodson...See below
3. Abner Dodson.....Born about 1847 in Grainger County, Tennessee.
4. Catherine Dodson.....Born July 11, 1850 in Grainger County, Tennessee.
5. Claiborne Edwin Dodson....Born about 1853.

8. Colman Burd Dodson....Born February 13, 1860 in Missouri.
9. Sarah "Rosa" Belle Dodson....Born January 4, 1862 in Polk County, Missouri.

On the 1880 census he is listed with his 2nd wife, Louisa Gothard. They were married in Missouri on June 22, 1971 and had four children: Austin, Martha, Anna and Samuel. On the 1900 census, Louisa is listed as a 64 year old widow with no children at home. It shows one female living in her household, Letha A. Gothard, a 62 year old single woman. This could be a sibling of Louisa's. John died some time after 1880 when his last child was born.

Matilda Dodson was born in Grainger County, Tennessee in September of 1847. Some sources say she was born on August 27, 1845 in Kentucky. Her tombstone says she was born in 1845, but stones have been wrong before. She married John M. Needham on November 5, 1862 in Polk County, Missouri when she was 15 years old. If this statement is true, that means she was born in 1847. The ceremony was performed by A. Milikin, a Justice of the peace for Polk County, Missouri. Matilda was seven months pregnant when John died. After John’s death Matilda moved to Farmer’s Branch, Texas. It was there that she applied for a widow’s pension for John’s Civil War service. The pension was for $25 a month. When her youngest daughter, Orpha married, Matilda lived with her and her family in Collin County, Texas. Matilda died on November 30, 1918.

They had eleven children:
1. Laura Alice Needham.......Born November 25, 1863. Married Peter B. Yount, widow of Mary Jane Cuffman.
2. Annie Needham........Born March 6, 1865. Married William J. Yount, brother of Ida Odell Yount.
3. Lizzie Needham.......Born 1866. Married William Ford.
4. *Henry Nelson Needham.......See below
5. John Logan "Tobe" Needham......Born April 31, 1870.
6. Wilson Wayne Needham........Born October 27, 1872.
7. Martha Belle Needham........Born 1874.
8. Arthur R. "Ott" Needham.....Born 1876. Married Susie Hill.
9. William Columbus Needham....Born April 11, 1878 in Polk County, Missouri.
10.Minnie Needham......Born 1879 in Polk County, Missouri.
11.Orpha J. Needham.....Born April 2, 1882. Married Henry L. Cook.

Henry Nelson Needham was born on September 30, 1868 in Polk County Missouri. He married Ida Odell Yount on June 17, 1888. Two of Henry’s sisters and an uncle also married into the Yount family. Henry and Ida's first three children were born in Polk County Missouri but the last one was born in Collin County, Texas on September 12, 1901. Therefore we know the family moved from Missouri to Texas some time between 1894 and 1901.

Ida and Henry had six children:
1. Vera Maybelle Needham.....Born December 22, 1889. Married Thomas Plemons December 7, 1907. Later married Hut Brown October 17, 1917. Died March 2, 1974.
2. Rebecca “Beckie” Needham.....Born March 30, 1892. Married Fletcher Arteberry November 11, 1911. Died February 12, 1942 of PCK disease.
3. *Tollie Nelson Needham .....See below
4. Henry Arvell "Dick" Needham...Born May 30, 1896. Killed at 17 by a friend while squirrel hunting.
5. Pete Morrison "Jack" Needham...Born October 17, 1898. Married Essie in 1919. Died December 31, 1948 of PCK disease.
6. John Ranson "Cooch" Needham...Born September 12, 1901. Married Maybelle Bush February 7, 1924. Died December 10, 1968.

In the 1910 census of McIntosh County, Oklahoma, Henry’s family is listed.

I found this news item from an old Eufaula, Oklahoma newspaper on the internet.

Mary Jane Cuffman was born on April 20, 1844 in Sumner County. She married Peter B. Yount on September 18, 1861 in Sumner County, Tennessee. The Smith family brought the kidney disease (PCK) into our family. Mary Jane’s mother, Mary Ann Smith, passed the disease to her and then she passed it on to at least two of her children. At some point after the birth of Ida Odell, the family moved to Missouri since Ida's two younger siblings were born in Missouri and Mary Jane died there on January 24, 1878 in Polk County.

The six children of Peter B Yount and Mary Jane Cuffman:

She is buried in the old Checotah Cemetery. The immediate cause of death was a fall from her horse when she was struck by a low hanging limb. Although she was only 34 years old she was already suffering from polycystic kidney disease that she had inherited from her mother.
