Roll of the Régiment de Carignan-Salières

The only period document found so far related to the roll of the Régiment de Carignan-Salières is kept at the "Archives des Colonies" of France in Serie D2c, volume 47, available on microfilm. A copy is kept by the National Archives of Canada available on microfilm reel C-9149. It is not known if the microfilmed document in Ottawa is the 1668 original or a later handwritten copy. I have asked the National Archives to clarify this point but I have not received an answer yet.
This web page gives the list as it appears on the microfilm, with the original orthography including original misspellings in some cases or missing accents.
The document reproduced on the microfilm is a hand written list of the militaries who decided to stay in Canada in 1668 at the end of their three year engagement. The original list was likely prepared for discharge and accounting purpose, as each soldier who decided to establish himself in Canada was given a monetary bonus by the king.
Hence the list is not a complete true roll of the regiment.
It might even include Canadians who served as guides or militias attached to a company and who were not enrolled soldiers but were deemed to have merited from the king. As well it may contain the names of Canadians who were enrolled in the regiment in Canada in 1666 to replace dead soldiers, although in theory these should have been discharged only in 1669.The list may not include all the soldiers who eventually decided to stay in Canada. For instance some of the soldiers who went back to France in 1668 (hence not on this 1668 list) came back to Canada in 1669 and stayed.
The names on the list are mostly "dit" names. The term "dit" is the equivalent of "also known as" (a.k.a.) in English.These were the nicknames given to the recruits at the time of hazing and were the only names used officially for soldiers while in the army. Only the officers down to enspassade level kept their real names. This is still practiced in the Foreign Legion of France.
Many persons have attempted to identify the soldiers on that list, the main researchers being Benjamin Sulte, Léo Leymarie, Régis Roy, Gérard Malchelosse and F-J Audet to name a few. Their works have been published.These original publications contained a few errors of identification. They have been reproduced and re-assessed many times by others. Unfortunately new errors have been introduced in these re-works and are still being conveyed today. Most printed reproductions of the list published by various researchers contained freely corrected orthographs which sometimes have led to errors in identification.
The safest list, but also the shortest, would be drawn from the comments in Jetté's "Dictionnaire généalogique des familles du Québec, des origines à 1730" (ISBN 2-7606-0645-5) under each entry, as the PDRH is known to have been very careful in assessing the evidences.
