The Beginning:

Sha Zahn Afghans (pronounced Sha Zon) was established in March of 1978 when I (Don) purchased my first afghan puppy "Villie". She was my first dog for that matter, as we weren't allowed to have a dog as children. I was just shy of 20 when I bought her (no papers available) and arranged to keep her at a friends house. Well, it still didn't feel like I "owned" a dog, because I always had to go "there" to see and care for her (I practically lived there). I decided to get a place of my own and within 6 months I had 3 afghans, and have never owned any less than that since (29 years now)! I was just fascinated by this breeds unique look and personality. I WAS HOOKED!!! For the first 7 years I was what you could consider an afghan rescue home. I had an average of 6 afghans,(3 of my own) some with papers, and some with "no clue" as to where they came from. I would take in afghans that were at pounds, or hit by a car (pay the Vet bill), get their coats in better shape (while socializing them for a few months) and then find them good homes. After 7 years of decorating my backyard with all these dogs, I decided that it was time to try to reap more rewards for all my grooming efforts! I felt that I had owned and learned about afghans long enough to want to try "the show scene", so I purchased my first show quality afghan "Chrissie" (Thaon's Charisma of Sha Zahn) from Jay Hafford of "Thaon Kennels". She won all her single points quickly but never did finish her championship.

THAON'S CHARISMA OF SHA ZAHN 7/14/84 - 5/13/98 While Chrissie was looking for major shows to go to I purchased my second bitch from Jay- "Zia". She went on to become my first champion - Group Winning Am.Can.Ch.Thaon's Zelica of Sha Zahn. She won alot of "firsts" for me - winning 2 Specialty Best In Sweepstakes, and 5 Best Of Breeds from the classes, including the day she finished her (and my first) championship by winning Best of Breed over 5 specials, and going on to win the hound group over 147 hounds (also my first)!

AM.CAN.CH.THAON'S ZELICA OF SHA ZAHN 6/5/86 - 12/4/98 After 13 years of owning these beloved creatures, I "took the plunge" and bred "Zia"! Like many other American breeders', I too like the look of the Coastwind/Akaba/Mecca related lines, and have bred 5 litters in the past 10 years based on that same basic phenotype/heritage.
Every dog I keep is shown to it's Canadian championship first. We don't have training classes here in the mountains of northern New Hampshire, and I only live 15 miles from the Quebec, Canadian border. In Canada you're allowed to practice working your dogs in the ring when their not being used (unlike the US). By the time they finish their Canadian championship they are "ring trained" enough to start showing in the more competitive U.S. shows.
