Gilbert Lee was borned in Harlan Co., Kentucky May 17,1865 to Stephen Lee(1847) and Hester "Hattie " Saylor(9/25/1846) one of seven children. I have been told he was a very good man and a god-fearing man but like the men who grew up in that area and that time he took care of his family. I was told that he sold the land and the businesses he owned in Harlan Co. because of threats on his life and that of his family. He was from what I can tell a very rich man for that time. He was also thought to be the only son of Stephen Lee to have died a natural death. Most were shot. One was shot in the Ball House about a mile from Gilbert's home in Oppossum Hollow, Rose Hill, VA in Lee Co. when revenuers tried to enter the hou and a gun fight insued. The man was a friend and he stoped to help. Back then the Revenuers were the enemy. The Ball man was said to have escaped by first putting his wife in the chimney, putting on her clothes and leaving when they allow all women and children to go. He came to Gilberts and informed him of his brothers death. We live on the sight of the Lee house.
