2 SEPTEMBER 2002
The following was written on Sunday afternoon… I had written a lot more, but my palm pilot decided to spaz on me and I lost everything…
My first solo tourist adventure didn’t quite go as planned, but I had a great time despite my HUGE blunder. Yes, I made a very stupid mistake… I assumed I knew where Kings Bay was but in reality I was 103 miles off. I didn’t realize my mistake until later in the day after doing the tourist thing in Savannah. I was headed North on I-95 when I noticed that the exit numbers were in the 100’s and not Exit 3. I pulled off and checked the map for the first time and saw that King’s Bay was North of Jacksonville and not North of Savannah. OOOPPPs! I couldn’t help but laugh at my stupidity ;-) Yes, I could have cancelled my reservations and just stayed in Savannah; however, I went with my gut feeling and headed South.
As it was, I enjoyed myself in Savannah and saw just about everything that I wanted to. I stopped at the Visitor’s Center where I picked up brochures and also where I hopped on the trolley tour. It was the tour that provided the sense of satisfaction of seeing and experiencing Savannah. I even got off the trolley at River St and explored the famous waterfront shops and restaurants which was one of my main objectives. The only thing that I felt I missed was Tybee Island, but I decided I could always go back.
So here I sit on Sunday afternoon writing about my adventure… my days have been filled with exploration and my nights filled with total relaxation. St Mary’s and Kingsland turned out to be pretty interesting too. St Mary’s has its own historic thing going on with museums, churches, waterfront shops and restaurants. I toured the submarine museum and visited some of the shops before crossing the street to gaze at the water. By then it was starting to rain again so I headed back to my car and drove west to Kingsland where I heard the Annual Catfish Festival was about to kick off. Now that was enjoyable. In fact, I went back today to enjoy one of the concerts. I would have stayed longer but the weather wasn’t cooperating. I swear it has rained for 3 days now but luckily it didn’t dampen my spirits or my adventure ;-)
I’m taking the scenic route home tomorrow just for fun… tis not an actual scenic route, but instead a few roads that I’ve never been on. Hwy 40 to 23 to 94… takes me through the bottom tip of Georgia…into Florida…then back into Georgia.
I made it home without incident… I thoroughly enjoyed the backroads… felt like I was the only person out there sometimes… had the windows down and my favorite music in the background… quite peaceful really and even with the blunder, I had a great time with me, myself, and I and look forward to my next adventure.
Back.
