Yep, as you know Steven & I were married back in May of 1997. We went on a roadtrip honeymoon. No, we weren't too cheap to fly. There's a lot of things that you just don't get to see from an airplane window. Can't even see the roadkill from up there.
Well, here are some of the highlights of the trip. I would reccomend South Dakota for a vacation for anyone who enjoys the great outdoors.
We had booked a cabin at The Mystery Mountain Resort but once we got there we realized that the one we had reserved was a little bigger than a wood shed. Guess we shouldn't have complained, there was hot & cold running water. Well, we decided that if we were to stay there, we'd better see if they didn't have a bigger cabin available. We were in luck, and before we knew it we were standing in a huge cabin with a full kitchen and bath. We weren't there for long before we realized who was living next door !!
The wild beasts at Bear Country USA were our next door neighbors. We took a walk to the edge of the property to make sure that there weren't any holes in the fences where any of them could get through. We were so close that you could even hear the bears growling at night. Or was that my husband ??
One of the main reasons that we chose South Dakota was Mount Rushmore. But wouldn't you know it - the day that we tried to see it was too foggy. We did get a good look at George Washington's nostril !!
Keystone, South Dakota's claim to fame is the 1880 Train Ride. It takes you from Keystone to Hill City. The ride is absolutely beautiful as you travel the same path that was followed long ago. What we didn't know is that once we got to Hill City, we were stranded for almost 2 hours before the train went back. So, we wandered into town and had lunch at the J-9 Cafe. The food & service was so good, that we drove back the next day for breakfast.
No trip to South Dakota would be complete without a drive through the Badlands. Talk about desolation.
Well, that's all I have to say about that.
