In March, 1997 we joined Kyle's mother for a week on the Big Island of Hawaii. We divided our time between Hawaiian Volcanoes National Park on the east side of the island and the Kona coast on the west side. While the former provided fascinating lessons in geology and incredible views of lava flows and sulphur vents, it also provided a valuable lesson in traveling with toddlers: don't try to stay in too many different locations. The stint at a family-friendly condo on the Kona coast was much more appropriate. The kids loved the beaches, hot tub, and luau.
