INTRODUCTION

This document was created by Joe Jones from his Jones Database on Family Origins software, version 3.0. I am in the process of converting to Family Origins V6.0 and may have some better displays then. This page was created by making a text file using the Ahnentafel format, which begins with the most recent listed person and numbers the generations back to the oldest listed generation. This is the reverse of what most family history books use.
This format simply lists all ancestors of the first generation person who are in the database. The reader needs some knowledge of the lineage in order to understand who’s who. A useful feature is that every person listed (except for possible errors) is an ancestor of the “first generation” person. Since this particular document emphasizes the Jones line, we have highlighted the Jones ancestors in the following text.

FIRST GENERATION

1. JOSEPH LESLIE JONES was born on 15 Feb 1929 in Salley, SC. Graduated on 6 Jun 1946 in Salley High School, Salley, SC. Graduated on 10 Jun 1950 in The Citadel, Charleston, SC.

SECOND GENERATION

2. HERBERT O'NEIL JONES SR was born on 28 Sep 1884. Died on 8 Mar 1953 in Salley, SC. Buried in Oakview Cemetery, Salley, SC. Educated Massey Business College, Macon, Ga. Deacon and Clerk of Salley Baptist Church; K. of P.; Postmaster, Salley, 1914-1934. First president of the South Carolina Branch of the National League of Postmasters, served 15 years in this position. He retired as South Carolina representative for the Augusta Chronicle prior to his death.

Worked at Sonoco Products, Hartsville sometime between Massey Business College and the date he went into business with his “Uncle Archie” Bull on Main Street in Columbia (about 1904 - 1908, Sonoco was started in 1899). It was while working in that store that he met Lottie, who lived not far from Main Street, and probably passed the store regularly.

3. CHARLOTTE ALMA (LOTTIE) LEVIN was born on 5 Feb 1890 in Columbia, SC. Died in Dec 1970 in Salley, SC. Buried in Oakview Cemetery, Salley, SC. She was named for her mother and her mother's mother.

THIRD GENERATION

4. JAMES ALFRED JONES SR was born on 13 Jan 1854 in Orangeburg County, SC. Died on 25 Jun 1925 in Salley, SC. Buried in Oakview Cemetery, Salley, SC. He was born at the family home near pond and mill on Beaver Creek. He was about ten years old when Sherman's troops came through the area on their way to Columbia. They burned three sawmills on Beaver Creek and much lumber at another sawmill. See Jones history for more details.

Note in file says he died on June 23.

5. RACHEL CORNELIA (CORRIE) WANNAMAKER was born on 3 Mar 1861 in Orangeburg, SC. Died on 30 Nov 1929 in Salley, SC. Buried in Oakview Cemetery, Salley, SC. Was a member of W.C.T.U., Missionary Society and Eastern Star. Had an "unusually strong, sweet voice" and "she was much in demand to sing at church affairs". Was a great-grand-daughter of Lieut. Jacob Wannamaker of Revolutionary fame.

T&D carried an article on Jun 3, 1876 re Glee Club program at Elliott's Hall at which "Miss Corrie Wannamaker and Miss Wessie Collins sang "Good Night, My Love, Good Night". She was fifteen at the time. She married at sixteen and her first child was born when she was eighteen.

6. LIPMAN THEODORE LEVIN Jr was born on 28 Sep 1850 in Columbia, SC. Died on 27 Feb 1910 in Columbia, SC. Buried in Elmwood Cemetery, Columbia, SC. Member, Richland Volunteers. Was clerk, US Revenue Office circa 1888 - 1891. Later bookkeeper, Murray Drug Co. Lived at 103 Gates St. when Lottie was born, later at 1408 Plain St. Martha has papers re Plain St. house?

See obituary. Apparently died of a heart attack. Lottie and Herbert were living on Elmwood at the time he died? Lottie was about four months pregnant with Herbert Jr. Lipman & Alma are buried in Elmwood Cemetery, Columbia. Turn left past building at entrance, look for "Green" marker at family plot.

7. ALMA ADELAIDE ZEALY was born on 10 Jan 1858 in Grahamville, SC. Died on 22 May 1903. Buried in Elmwood Cemetery, Columbia, SC. See notes re cemetery near Ridgeland.

Youngest of 13 children

Alma may have been a sister of L. N. Zealy, b. 1849-51.

J. T. Zealy was a photographer in Columbia in 1850. See newspaper clipping with one of his pictures of a black male.

FOURTH GENERATION

8. JAMES DEMPSEY JONES SR was born on 20 Aug 1824 in Near North, SC. Died on 12 Jun 1905. He settled on land purchased from his step children (children of John Henry Livingston, namely Henrietta Livingston Hydrick and John H. Livingston), near Beaver Creek. Original home was destroyed by fire in 1933. Site is now the home of Mary Frances Pooser Corbett (Mrs. Pete Corbett), a descendant.
1850 census of Orangeburgh District: J. D. Jones, age 24, planter, value of real estate $2300, number in household 1, number of slaves 9. He was a lieutenant in Hagood’s First Regiment in Civil War. See additional information in Jones history. Note in file says he was born in 1826.

9. MARY ELIZABETH (LIVINGSTON) DAVIS was born on 4 Jan 1827. Died on 15 Dec 1901 in Jones Cemetery. Biography of Mary Elizabeth Davis Livingston Jones by Luther D. Weeks of Elkton, Ky says she was born April 27, 1827 and died May 11, 1901. See pg. 260 of Jones book.

Her first husband was John Henry Livingston. Was he the John H. Livingston who built the Orangeburg County Courthouse?

1850 Census: Mary E. Livingston, age 23, value of real estate $4000, number in household 4, number of slaves 44.

10. HAYNE CALHOUN WANNAMAKER was born on 16 Feb 1833. Died on 16 Jun 1894. Shuler Family History says he died June 16, 1896.

11. ELIZABETH LEWIS SHULER was born on 16 Feb 1833. Shuler Family history gives birthdate as January 20, 1834. Died on 27 Dec 1902 in Orangeburg, SC. Buried in Orangeburg, SC.

12. LIPMAN T. LEVIN Sr. Member, Richland Volunteers, Secretary 1854, served on Sullivan's Island, 1861. Brother of Nathaniel Levin (1816 - 1899)?

Father of Lipman Theodore Levin Jr. Other children may have included Jacob and Lewis C., only other Levins listed in Cola. city dir. 1875 - 1903. Jacob was treasurer of the "Gas Light Company" in 1875. Could have been about 35 years old. However, a "Jacob Levin" was married to Miss Julia Mordecai in the Hebrew Synagogue on Wednesday, August 21, 1850, by Rev. P.S. Jacobs (from "The South Carolinian", issue of August 27, 1850). This Jacob was too old to be son of Lipman and Charlotte. Need to find his gravestone - probably in Jewish cemetery in Columbia.

See wife's notes. Need to research Richland Volunteers in Richland County library.

5-1-96: Researched Cola. city directories at Rich. Cty. Lib. for 1875 - 1903. Created s/s listing all Levin's and Zealy's in directories. See E:\Persjlj\Levin...

Do Jews not use "Sr." and "Jr."? Martha thinks this is true.

13. CHARLOTTE AUGUSTA WOOLF was born on 17 Nov 1817. Died on 1 Feb 1883. Jewish name: Leah, daughter of Isaac.

Born in 1817, she was five years old when Denmark Vessey, on xxxx, 1822, planned a "Righteous Rebellion" to liberate Charleston Slaves. The rebellion was stopped just hours before it was to unfold. She was fifteen when the "Best Friend" made its historic first run to Hamburg in 1832. Did she and her family ever ride on the Best Friend? In 1838, when Leah was twenty-one, the synagogue at which her family worshipped, Kahal Kadosh Beth Elohim) was destroyed by fire. In 1840, the current synagogue was constructed and it included an organ, a first for a U.S. Jewish congregation. Four years later, Leah and Lipman were married in this synagogue. Wouldn't it be great to have a videotape of that wedding?

Where did the name "Augusta" come from? Was it a traditional Jewish name? Is it a coincidence that her name was the same as two cities, Charlotte and Augusta? Did her family or ancestors possibly live in Charlotte and Augusta at some time prior to her birth?

14. WILLIAM POPE ZEALY was born on 16 Feb 1806 in Beaufort, SC. Died on 24 Dec 1872 in Grahamville, SC. Buried in Grahamville, SC. Gravestone: "Erected by his fond wife". See note for James E. Zealy.

Joe Jones visited Grahamville cemetery January 31, 1990. It is just across I-95 from Ridgeland.

What was the connection between him and Lawrence, Joseph T. and Eleanor (Becky). Did Lipman Levin Jr. meet Alma through Columbia Zealy's? There were only three Zealys listed in Cola. directory 1875 - 1904.

15. LYDIA ANN MICKLER was born on 12 Feb 1812 in St. Mary's, Ga. Died on 6 Mar 1890 in Grahamville, SC. Buried in Grahamville, SC. My notes from tombstone say birthdate was 1819 but other notes say "1812 or 1813". Tombstone says "Rest in Peace".

She lost a 22 year old daughter in 1858 and a 22 year old in 1861. Her third child, Alma Adelaide, was born two months after her daughter Dora died.

FIFTH GENERATION

16. THOMAS JONES was born on 2 Jan 1795. Died on 24 Jan 1842. Buried in Jones Cemetery. Page 9 of Jones history says he died 24 Feb, page 14 says 24 Jan.

17. CHARITY CORBITT was born on 29 Nov 1794. Died on 30 Dec 1847. Buried in Jones Cemetery. Note in file says she died in 1842 or 1847?

18. SIDNEY MARQUESE DAVIS was born on 17 Nov 1808. Eloise Jones' book, pg. 258, says he was born 13 Oct 1805 and died 1845. Died on 21 Sep 1840. Another source says he was born Oct. 13, 1805 and died 1845.

19. NANCY ANNE SALLEY was born on 13 Sep 1803 in family plantation near present Town of Salley. Born on her father's plantation in Orangeburg District, SC, north of the present Town of Salley cemetery about midway of the cemetery center point. Died on 5 Apr 1878. Her childhood home was near Salley cemetery

Another reference says she was born in 1805 and died 1877..

20. JACOB WANNAMAKER Rev was born on 25 Aug 1777. Died on 25 Sep 1834.

21. RACHEL WHETSTONE. Not in Jones book. Needs research.

22. LEWIS HAYNE SHULER II was born on 2 Dec 1795 in Orangeburg County, SC. He bought three hundred acres of land near Bowman where he grew indigo and was a very successful farmer. Through the years, his land has been divided between his children and their children, iand is still owned by the descendants of Lewis in Bowman. Died on 5 Mar 1847. Buried in small family cemetery out from Bowman off Hwy 178, close to where John Rhett Shuler lives or lived.

SIXTH GENERATION

32. JEREMIAH JONES was born on 27 Dec 1759 in Darlington District. Died on 3 May 1848. Buried in Jones Cemetery. Brothers: ? Thomas, John, Richard, Nathaniel, Elisha

Richard: had one daughter, no sons. Land grants 1813, 1814, 1827, 1829. Lived Jones X-rd near Batesburg?

Nathaniel: Edgefield County?

Stub entries to indents for Revolutionary War claims, archives, Shelf Loc. E263, Volume U-W, Entry V 543:

"Issued 20th August 1785 to Jeremiah Jones for six pound twelve shilling and ten pence for militia duty in 1781 and 1782 per account audited. Principal 6 12 -10 1/4. Annual Ins 0 - 9.3_."

Jeremiah and family migrated from Colleton District to the vicinity of the present Jones Cemetery on the 96 road about 1810. His descendents harvested timber and floated logs down the Edisto River to Colleton district. Is it possible that there were some "connections" with the sawmill operators resulting from the time spent in the Colleton District? Need to research the sawmill business in the low country.

33. ELIZABETH MERCER was born on 24 Mar 1769 in Darlington District. Died on 4 Aug 1828 in Jones homestead. Buried in Jones Cemetery. It is the opinion of the author of the Jones history that Elizabeth Mercer was the daughter or granddaughter of Thomas Mercer Sr., of Darlington District. The Joneses and Mercers were neighbors, according to records of land grants and land sales. For more, see Jones history. May have been a sister of Capt. Hugh Mercer, Founder of Mercer University.

Cemetery marker says she died 1838?

Should check connection with family of John Francis Mercer of Va.. See record herein.

34. JOHN CORBITT JR

35. ANN ELIZABETH COOPER. Died at age 93. 2d par. pg 9 (what book?) indicates that John Cooper was father or brother?

36. NEEDHAM DAVIS was born on 21 Apr 1780 in near Smithfield, NC. Died on 29 Nov 1860. Buried in about 1/4 mile from Davis bridge. Needham and Mourning both died at their home near Davis' bridge and were buried in family grave plot on the hill about a fourth of a mile from the Bridge. "Before 1803" or "9/1804" they moved to South Edisto River, Barnwell District, at Davis Mill or Davis Bridge.

Pg. 258, Eloise Jones book: They moved from Smithfield to Columbia, SC in 1807 or 1808. In 1814 they moved to their final home on the South Edisto River, Barnwell District, now Aiken County, where they established a home, mill, etc., and where Needham practiced medicine. When a US post office was established and named Davis' Mill, Needham was appointed Postmaster and held the post until his death in 1860. The name of the postoffice was later changed to Davis' Bridge and was abandoned in 1904.

37. ELIZABETH NORRIS was born on 17 Aug 1781. Died on 16 Jun 1866.

38. JACOB SALLEY was born in 1769. Died in 1830. Buried in Gin Branch Cemetery. See pgs 55 and 260 of O. J. Salley's Salley Family History.

39. ELIZABETH CORBITT was born on 12 Nov 1774. Died in 1830. Died after 1830, per OJS.

40. JACOB WANNAMAKER Lieut, immigrated in 1738 from Palatinate, Rhineland of Germany thru Switzerland. [S1].

41. ANNE RUMPH

42. WILLIAM WHETSTONE REV

43. MARGARET ZIMMERMAN. Not in Jones book. Needs research.

44. LEWIS HAYNE SHULER I

46. PETER FREDERICK was born in 1775.

47. ANN WABER/WAMER was buried in Shuler family cemetery near Bowman. Shuler family history says only "Ann Waber". "Waber" does not appear in the Culler book, but "Wamer" does (Elizabeth Frederick Wamer married John Wamer, then married Dr. John Rumph after John Wamer's death. Since "Frederick" appears in both sets of names, there is probably a connection.)

SEVENTH GENERATION

64. THOMAS JONES was born in 1720 in Chowan County, NC. Died in 1820. Buried in Swift Creek Bapt. Church Cemetery (see notes). . Buried in unmarked graves in old cemetery at Swift Creek Baptist Church. Settled in Darlington District, SC, on Lynches River, near what is now Darlington, SC.. Both are buried in the old cemetery at Switf Creek Baptist Church, in unmarked graves. (verification from Dr. Daniel Morgan's Memoirs of the Jeremiah Jones Family, written in 1930.)

L. H. Jones: "Thomas Jones married and had issue, at least one son, who was born about 1756. Thomas was living June 8th, 1762, I think, near Cape Fear, North Carolina; and in Oct. 1743, he was living in New Hanover County, North Carolina."

Thomas was Frederick's third son. See Frederick's will in L. H. Jones' book.

65. MARY RUTH PURDUE was buried in Swift Creek Baptist Church, old cemetery, unmarked grave. See notes re burial, etc. on husband's entry.

May have been Purdew, Perdew, Perdum, Purdum, etc.

3/97: Article about possible finding of Blackbeard's ship off N.C. coast mentions "Sen. Beverly Perdue, D-Craven, whose district includes the state maritime museum." The museum is in Beaufort, NC.

Her husband, Thomas, was born in Chowan County, NC, in 1720, so she was probably born in that area and between 1720 and 1750.

66. THOMAS? MERCER

68. JOHN CORBITT SR. Came to SC from NC after Revolutionary War. Family came from Wales to PA in 1688.

72. JOHN CLARKE DAVIS was born in 1755 in Wales. Died on 9 Nov 1831. Buried in just outside Smithfield, NC. John Clark Davis was a Revolutionary soldier as were his three brothers. He served with the 10th North Carolina Regiment. Any descendent is eligible for membership in D.A.R. and S.A.R. Came to America before the Revolution with his three brothers. He and one of his brothers settled in either Wake or Johnston County, North Carolina near Smithfield. The other two brothers settled in Virginia. The Davis brothers were of noble birth of Welsh descent. They and their families were highly educated - many of them were doctors, ministers, and teachers. John and his three brothers were all soldiers in the Revolutionary War: John was wounded in battle and was a cripple for life.

73. MOURNING PILKINTON was born in 1761. Died in 1843. Date may have been 1845. Buried in just outside Smithfield.

EIGHTH GENERATION

128. FREDERICK JONES was born in 1670 in England. Died in 1722 in Chowan Precinct, North Carolina. Captain Roger Jones gave to his oldest son, Frederick, lands in North Carolina, in Counties Chowan, Hyde, Craven, and Beaufort Precincts. Frederick's name appears frequently in the Colonial Records of North Carolina. He also held important official trust in that Colony. Frederick lived in James City, VA, afterward moved to NC, where he died in Chowan Precinct in 1722.

Frederick's will is in the Appendix of L. H. Jones' book. In it, Frederick mentions "Lands lying in King William County in Virginia commonly called Horns Quarter...". He left his brother Thomas "ten pounds Sterling to buy a Suit of mourning". He designated his brother Thomas and two of his sons, William Harding and Frederick as his Executors.

129. SARAH JANE HARDING. Eloise Jones said Sarah Jane Harding Jones was from Virginia.

NINTH GENERATION

256. ROGER JONES, CAPTAIN was born on 12 Jun 1642 in England. Christened on 23 Jun 1642. Died in 1701 in Nottinghamshire Co., Mansfield, England. Buried on 6 Jan 1701 in Parish Church of Mansfield, Nottinghamshire. Judge L.H. Jones' book on Roger Jones says he was born "we suppose, about 1625-35." Eloise Jones' book gives dates shown herein. Her source unknown.
See L.H. Jones' book for more on Roger's mother's family.
In 1891, Judge L. H. Jones of Winchester, Kentucky, published the book “CAPTAIN ROGER JONES of LONDON AND VIRGINIA”. He was a descendant of Thomas Jones, who settled in Kentucky, while his brother, Frederick, settled in North Carolina. The descendants of Roger, therefore, spread throughout the country through two routes - Kentucky and North Carolina. Roger Jones is therefore the common ancestor of two grouups of Joneses, each of them probably numbering in the thousands, who do not know that they have the same ancestor.

257. DOROTHY WALKER [S2] was born in 1642. Christened on 12 Sep 1642. Died on 12 Sep 1696. Buried in Nottinghamshire Co., Mansfield, England.
