HALL HISTORY

Taken from Pioneers of Wiregrass Georgia

by Judge Folks Huxford.

The earliest established record on our Hall Family is a will of Isaac Hall of Surry County, Virginia, deed and will Book 8 page 41, dated Dec. 20, 1728 and probated in Surry County Court Aug. 19, 1730. He bequeathed his lands to his sons William, George, Isaac and Lewis Hall. His wife Judith Hall was executrix. This will was found by Patrick H. Sellers, who furnished me a copy. Judge Huxford states in P W G Volume 6 page 293 that Judith Hall was the d/o Lewis Green of Surry county, Virginia

LEWIS HALL SR: The above son Lewis Hall—later referred to as Lewis Hall Sr. was next located in Bladen and Robeson counties, North Carolina. Robeson county was formed from Bladen County in 1787. Bladen County courthouse was burned in 1785 and all records were destroyed. There are several conveyances to and from Lewis, Enoch, and William Hall in Bladen county in the years 1771 to 1775. Several land grants from the State of North Carolina to Lewis Hall SR are recorded here between the years 1784 and 1792, and also several to Lewis Hall Jr. and Instance Hall. Also on file in Robeson county are several conveyances to and from William, Instance (Instant), Lewis Jr., Lewis SR and Isaac Hall during the periods 1784 to, with a John Hall and Enoch Hall as witnesses in some cases. Also George Colley witnessed a deed from Lewis Hall Sr in 1792- see second marriage of Lewis Hall, Jr. Lewis Hall Sr and his sons Lewis Jr., Enoch, Instance and Thomas Hall were all Revolutionary soldiers in North Carolina. It has not been established how many children Lewis Hall SR had but the four sons, Lewis Jr., Enoch, Instance and Thomas moved to Georgia in the 1790’s and were first found in the tax-digest of Montgomery County Ga in 1797. A detailed account of Lewis Hall Jr. and his children will follow. Instance Hall later moved to Laurens County, GA and nothing further is known of him. Thomas Hall died in Tattnall county, GA and his brothers, Lewis and Enoch, were appointed administrators of his estate. No additional information available on Thomas. Enoch Hall was first in Montgomery county, then Tattnall and later in Telfair county. No record was found of his military service in North Carolina, however his widow Nancy Hall of Telfair County, drew land in the Ga Land lottery of 1827 as the widow of a Revolutionary soldier. She drew land lot No. 388, 7th district of Lee county. Enoch Hall’s wife was Nancy Ann Jackson, cousin of Andrew Jackson. A very lengthy account on the Enoch Hall family is given in Pioneers of Wiregrass Ga. Vol. 1 Page 110, with corrections or additions carried Vol. 1 pages 305-6 and Vol. III Page 370. Enoch Hall was born 1754 and died about 1815 in Tattnall county, Georgia.

LEWIS HALL JR.: Lewis Hall Jr. was b 1753 and died April 22, 1821 in Tattnall county, GA. Judge Huxford was furnished a copy of the Lewis Hall family Bible by a descendant. A great deal of the following account of Lewis Hall Jr. is taken from Pioneers of Wiregrass GA by Judge Huxford, Vol. 1 page 112-3, with additions and corrections contained on page 308 and in Vol. 11 page 306 and Vol 111 page 370.
