The Murphy/Murphree family came from Ireland to Bertie, Edgecombe, and Franklin counties, North Carolina, Smith county, Tennessee, and Pike county, Alabama.
Daniel and Sarah Dempsey Murphy/Murphree's descendants went to MS, TX, LA, TN, SC, and MO.
We think that our earliest James was not a son of Daniel of Chatham co NC, but a son of John who left a will in St. George's Parish, Ga (that later became Burke county.) The Burke county records burned, but our James was back in Edgecombe county, NC when he sold his Burke county grant of 1763. He sold it May 4, 1774, 100 acres.
Who John (his father) was has not been proved, but he may have been a brother to Daniel of Chatham and a son of William who died about 1715. When that William died he left four orphans. I think three of them were John, Daniel of Chatham, and Anne Murphree, a half sister. The fourth may be John Queen who (in his will) says Daniel is his brother. James, the son of Daniel and Sarah Dempsey married Millie or Mary, not Sarah Strother. James Murphree who married Sarah Strother, but not this one. Could he have been this James' son? Could two Murphrees have married Strother girls? More research needs to be done.
Murphy/Murphree reunions are held once a year in Alabama. Contact Vicki Booth.
