This is intended to be a history of the Shull Family of Virginia, Missouri and Texas. It is not as yet finished and will be added to over a period of time. The history mainly concentrates on the family of Abraham Shull of Missouri, his ancestors and descendants. Since this is a family history written especially for our kith and kin to read and enjoy, footnote references, bibliographies and other essentials have been all but omitted.
We hope that those of you who have access to this history will find as much interest and satisfaction in knowing something of your ancestors as we have had in the searching, gathering and compiling of this work.
Homage for the ancestral dead is an instinct still alive in the breasts of many, many people. We have a line of ancestry for which we entertain affectionate reverence and cordial admiration, a line of ancestry we are anxious to trace out to its remotest antiquity. In remembering the men and women of yesterday, in cherishing the record they made, around which today there is a halo of memories; in the contemplation of pages of history that tell us faithfully of the sacrifices made by other generations in their unselfish service, men and women of a later time grow finer, nobler, possessed of higher ideals, imbued with more splendid aspirations, theirs are the invisible fingers that reach out of the past to tune the instruments of our own souls into harmonious accord, that the symphony of our own lives may be attuned to those whose deeds we remember and whose lives we revere.
An unworthy characteristic of most of us is forgetfulness and unintended carelessness towards traditions, towards the legends and the recorded history of those early days. We take everything for granted - everything as our due, clutching close to ourselves, as pampered children do a favored toy, our own responsiblities are the most difficult of any area through which our civilization has come. We fail all too often to cultivate for ourselves a garden of memories where, in its quiet, we may go back over the years of our early history and where, in the contemplation of those lives, as may regain our courage, strengthen the foundations of our social, our political and our commercial order and nerve ourselves for a proper accomplishment of the pressing duties and obligations of today.
So let's travel the lanes of memory, let's frequent the sacred spots made so by sacrifice of the men and women of yesterday and pay grateful tribute to those who write in letters of crimson the record of their determinations to carve out of an uncharted wilderness this country we have enjoyed.
