- From the files of Peter Katzur. FILE: Thomas Bowerman II
had land granted to him in Falmouth in 1688 and on April
28 1690 purchased 100 __ on the easterly side of five
mile river now called Dexter River. He was town clerk of
Falmouth in 1702, 1704 and 1705. Although a Quaker he was
taxed to support the established church in Falmouth, a
tax he considered unjust and so in the winter of 1705-06
was committed to the Barnstable jail for non-payment of
the estraministerial tax to Rev. Joseph Metcalf whose
ministry neither he or his family attended. Between 1909
and 1918 his tax was force paid by the constable seizing
and selling 5 cows, 3 calves, 1 fat swine, 5 sheep and 12
pounds of wool with the proceeds going to the church.
