In 1251, on the death of his Mother, he did homage to Henry III for her lands in England. He was made Sheriff of Cumberland and Constable of Carlisle. His claim to the crown based on a verbal nomination (tanistry) by Alexander III. In 1290, on the death of the Maid of Norway, he and John BALIOL claimed the succession.
