irst Churchill in America to be descended from Mayflower
travelers. His mother, Lydia Harlow, is descended from Isaac
Allerton and Richard Warren of the Mayflower.
Lemuel emigrated to Nova Scotia in 1762. England had just defeated the French and taken full possession of Canada. They expelled all Acadians, French Nova Scotia residents, who would not swear allegiance to the King of England. These people became the Cajuns of Louisiana. Some later returned to the border area of northern Maine. The English probably encouraged English colonists in New England to emigrate to Canada to replace the deported French. Lemuel was one of these colonists. Churchills in Canada therefore differ from later New England immigrants to Nova Scotia who were loyalists during the American Revolution. Nothing is known of the political leanings of Churchills in Nova Scotia.
Lemuels Mayflower Index number is 7388. [SCHURCHL.GED]
