Philip III (of France), called The Bold (1245-85), king of France (1270-85), the son of King Louis IX, born in Poissy, near Paris. A weak ruler, he was dominated at various times by his chamberlain, his wife, his mother, and especially his uncle Charles I of Anjou, king of the Two Sicilies. In 1285, the last year of his reign, Philip made an unsuccessful attempt to annex the kingdom of Aragón. [Microsoft Encarta 98 Encyclopedia]
