William the Lyon succeeded his brother Malcolm in 1165. Origin of his designation a mystery. William supported King Henry of England in his continental wars. But being disappointed in not receiving disputed districts of Northumberland, he invaded. On 13 Jul 1174 he was captured near Alnwick Castle, conveyed to Normandy, and paid homage to Henry as the price of his liberation in the Treaty of Falaise, which was revoked by Richard I in 1189 for 10,000 marks. William founded in 1178, the Abbey of Arbroath, where he is buried. Burke’s Peerage reports buried at Aberbrothock. William had five illegitimate children, a son and four daughters, from each of whom sprang a claimant to the Scottish Crown in 1291-1292. {Burke’s Peerage and Chamber’s Biographical Dictionary} [GADD.GED]
