ecompense3 Landers (Richard2, Thomas1), born 7 Sept. 1704, died intestate, probably shortly before 15 Aug 1780, the date of the division of his estate.
He married (int. 21 Sept. 1729) Lydia2 Clifton, daughter of Savery1 and Dorothy (Burges) Clifton of Rochester, born in Rochester 29 May 1705 (Vital Records of Rochester, Mass., vol. 1, p.85; vol. 2, p.198), died after 16 May 1781 when she quitclaimed her dower rights. Her mother, a daughter of Joseph2 and Patience (Freeman) Burges, was a great granddaughter of Elder William Brewster of the Mayflower. Lydia and Recompense were first cousins-once-removed, as her grandmother, Patience3 (Freeman) Burges and his mother, Sarah3 (Freeman) Landers, were half-sisters.
Recompense Landers, like the other members of his branch of the family, was an active Quaker, as were the Savery Clifton family in Rochester. Recompense Landers name appears on a number of friends marriage certificates as recorded in the books of the Sandwich Monthly Meeting. He was chosen surveyor of highways in Falmouth 6 March 1737/8, and the record shows that he refused to take the oath of office, but, like his uncle, Joseph Landers, and other Quakers "promised to be faithful in the office according to the best of his understanding" (Falmouth Town Records, 1:104).
In the absence of land records it is fortunate that the probates fill in the picture of this family group:

A warrant, dated 16 May 1781, "for Dower, Falmouth, the widow of Recompense Landers" shows that Lydia Landers, the relict, had released her dower rights on all her husbands estate "excepting the lot which he bought of the administrators of the Estate of Daniel Eldridge, deceased", to which she now quit-claimed her power of thirds. Accepted 10 July 1781 (ibid., 21:109, 110 and 157).
