A fine soldier, he fought in the first Crusade. His long life ended in 1134 in Cardiff Castle, a prisoner of his brother Henry I with whom he had disputed the English throne. An early 13th century effigy of Irish Bog Oak recumbent on a 15th Century chest with an iron hearse framework for supporting a pall, lies in the South Aisle of Gloucester Cathedral. Signs of Damage by Roundhead soldiers are still visible despite restoration in the gilding and painting by Thomas Campion in 1665. Robert had asked to be buried before the High Altar. [THELMA.GED]
