Bowen wrote the entrance exam for RMC, even though he had only seen 1 military parade in his life - Confederation, when he was 8. He was accepted into the 1st class (1 June, 1876) and became company-sergeant for "the original 18". He was the top listed cadet, winning the Governor-General’s medal, and accepted a commission with the Royal Engineers (he had to withdraw, due to breaking his leg in a carriage accident). He commanded the RNWMP (1900) and on retirement in 1922 was appointed a Major-General (Can. Militia) - classmate of C. Fairbanks Petro. [PERRY.TXT]
