e was known as "Shoemaker John", to distinguish him from his grandfather (Weaver John) and his neighbours (Miller John and John the 3rd). He inherited considerable lands in Sandwich, especially from his grandfather Johns estate. Shoemaker John lived in the house which had been built by his grandfather until it burned in 1794.
