Anne de Beaujeu, c. 1460-1522, regent of France. With her husband, Pierre de Beaujeu, duc de Bourbon, she acted as regent for her brother, Charles VIII, after the death (1483) of Louis XI. Preserving the royal authority, she put down the rebellious great nobles and subdued Brittany. In 1491 she and her husband arranged the marriage of Charles VIII to Anne of Brittany, and soon afterward their influence declined. [The Illustrated Columbia Encyclopedia, 1969]
